Job 2:10 Job rebukes his wife for speaking as a foolish woman.

Corinthians 11:3–16. In some interpreations, women are commanded to cover their heads in worship to show they recognize their husband's authority coming from the fact that man was created first.

Corinthians 14:34–35. Women are told to be quiet in church.

Timothy 2:11–12. Women are told to be quiet in church because man was created first, and woman was deceived and sinned first.

Revelation 2:20 The church of Thyatira is rebuked for letting a women teach.

How is stuff like this read wrongly? It's pretty obvious that the Bible condones the fact that women are subordinate to men and just there for men, and that they aren't intelligent or worthy of anything more than looking after the men and children.

The bible doesnt say any of these things..

Woman in those days werent educated and were not permitted to teach in a church. Just like most churchs now wont have a man or woman teaching in the church that isnt educated.
These passages arent saying that a man is better than a woman or that a man is more intelligent than a woman.
It is not saying that a mans role in this world is better than a womans role. It could be viewd as saying that they are different.
I can understand how you might take offence to some of these passages though.

Well I'm going to have to agree to disagree with you because in a lot of Bible passages I've read I think it does say many of those things ^

The bible is sexist because it was written by men actively engaged in an oppressive patriarchal hierarchy that has spanned over the vast majority of all human history.

Exactly. The Bible was written by obviously educated males who consisted of a very small percentage of the population at the time.

Ok,

I just dont see how telling a woman to be quiet in church(among other things) is saying that a woman is worth less than a man or is only there to look after men and childeren.

The Bible says that woman and men were created in Gods image. And he loves them. The way Jesus is with woman when he is on earth certainly does not give the impression that he thinks woman are worth less than men.

Women had a special role in the bible and though this role is different it is by no means not as important as a mans.

1 Corinthians 14:34 - 35:

34. Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but [they are commanded] to be under obedience, as also saith the law.
35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

They aren't allowed to speak in church and if they do their husbands have to reprimand them because they are 'owned' and subordinate to their husbands.

Ephesians 5:22 - 25:

22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

1 Timothy 2:9 - 15:

11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

I could recite so many more passages, and I don't know how you interpret them, but I definitely read all of these similar passages as indicating that the wife is silent, subordinate and under the control of her husband. This is why The Bible was the main source used to argue against women's right to vote - because it indicates that women are not allowed to do such things, but instead they are supposed to remain silent, subordinate, and obedient to man.

As I said, I'm going to have to agree to disagree with you because obviously you interpret these passages quite differently to how I do.

I dont know if i interpret them differently but i think you jump to a conclusion with them. That because it says a woman should be quiet and listen to a mans direction (woman were uneducated at the time) then the bible is sexist and its suddenly men trying to control woman and keep them under men.

Anyway I just say dont throw out the whole bible as sexist and whatever just because a few verses hit a spot that seems uncomfortable for you. Learn about the whole bible, jesus, the over arching stories and context and then look at those passages with that in mind.

But we can agree to disagree on this..

There's no agreeing to disagreeing here. The bible constantly preaches that woman is inferior to man. It frequently states that woman are unpure and were made purely for man. I don't understand how you can excuse or even deny sexism in the bible.

We're not saying the whole Bible is any one thing. We're saying that if there are these obvious moral flaws in this book, that it should not be used as a moral guide.

The best moral guide I can think of is the Desiderata.
