European Elections

The left have taken a spanking. :(

Could you elaborate a bit? So far, this thread doesn't make much sense to me. I don't live in a EU country.

Are you talking about Gorden Brown being forced to resign by his own Labour party?

Guybrush 06-09-2009 08:28 AM

It's most probably about the recent european parliament election, but Norway's not a part of the EU and I haven't read a newspaper in a few days so I'm not up to date on this ..

Something beyond minimum effort is always appreciated when people make threads, especially on subjects like this.

I meant that No2eu and the socialist labour party did absolutely appallingly in the uk, whilst the conservatives ukip and the BNP flourished.

No2EU, from as far as I'm aware, is a non-partisan coalition. It's not exactly what I'd call leftist considering it's manifesto orients entirely around receding from the EU. ("New") Labour is also hardly what I'd call representative of the left nowadays. Increasingly I'd say Greens are the only real, major left party nowadays.

The "growth" of the BNP stems from the new found apathy of former centre-left voters who have lost faith in the parties they would normally vote for. UKIPs growth is similar, and achieved through being the next big party after the main three rather than a genuine change in a shift on opinions.

So, the left parties have taken a beating but I don't think the actual left is altogether different.
