Oh be city

(Obesity) - how my friend Steve used to say it :p: We could've told him how to really say it but oh well

I was watching Dr. Phil and they were arguing about being fat. "Hey I'm fat and that's O.K." "NO IT'S NOT! You need to be thin!" Now I obviously don't think overweight people should be made fun of or prejudiced, but I don't think they should teach the idea that it's "alright". We're made to be active and hunt for food, not lay on a couch and eat pork rinds. The overweight side of the argument were saying that you can be big and healthy or thin and unhealthy. The only issue with that is, well, I don't think there's been a sudden surge of people being "healthy and overweight". If you eat the right amount of food and eat what you should, there's no more issues.

What are your thoughts?

I think the real issue is people need to stop focusing on the specific weight of people and focus more on just freaking eating right.

If you eat right and are still fat, it is obvious that is just how your body is meant to be. If you are fat and eat 5 big macs a day, then you have a problem. Everyone is so vain in this country, that no one really cares about the health side of things and just how you actually look.

My mother is exactly like that.
She eats healthily, she does regular excercise. her doctor has told her plenty of times that she's perfectly healthy for a woman of her age and yet because she carries a few extra pounds people just assume that she does things like 'lay on a couch and eat pork rinds'

The prejudice is down to it both being a visible medical problem and something that society has deemed to be ugly. I doubt a junkie or an alcoholic would get anywhere near the abuse an obese person would.

YES! so many people seem hung up on the numbers but not the actual health involved. at the same time i'm hesitant to believe that if you ate a relatively healthy diet and got a modicum of exercise per week that you would become fat (to the point of it causing major health concerns / or with a lack of a medical history). you might not be rail thin but that's not the point.

i often wonder how much of a link in the increase in diabetes is directly related to overcompensating for the ridicule and bullying of not being the right shape and just encouraging people to be the way they are and to keep eating mayonnaise straight from the jar.

I couldn't have said that better myself.

There's also the issue of overweight children and the speculation that the parent's poor eating habits severely affect the health of their kids (obviously the kids are eating that stuff too). Those kids usually have the type of parents who eat 5 Big Macs everyday and buy their kids happy meals on a daily basis.

I don't know a single person gaining massive poundage from pork grinds, and anyway they're not that bad, and they are definitely not as as bad as high calorie soft drinks or soda, In fact if your dieting it's not a bad choice for a snack, and hot sauce is good on them too, but I would eat them every day maybe once in a blue moon. And I don't know anyone eating five Big Macs a day, maybe five times a week, even that is excessive. Still there is a big difference between 260 hamburgers and 1825 hamburgers a year. (I'm not defending parents who abuse their children with Mickey D's on a regualr basis.)

Sometimes a person could be heavy but not becase it was meant to be (eg the fat gene) or even by choice, the problem behind being ovewrweight could be a hidden medical issue, it could be a glandular problem. I know a lot of people who take pov of "it's their fault" for whatever medical problem. I hear people say a person with depression that it's their fault they make themselves depress. People believe lactose intolerence is all psychological. I know there are certain medical problems rooted in person psyche but everyone of them and certain issue get stigmatized believe it's entirely the persons fault. I think this is the case with obesity, there are different causes, but I don't judge because that person could be suffering from some meidical condition.

If a person is 50 pounds overweight maybe it's because of poor eating habits, but if a person is 100 or 200 I think it has to be medical issue. I know someone who said his doctor was going to drop as a patient if he didn't loose weight. It a shame he seriously diets and hardly eats anything and exercises a few times a week but the pounds won't come off. And I don't understand why the doctor said that to him, the doctor should be doing something to find out what the cause him being overweight. I think doctors should take into consideration whether or not overweight is cause by a medical condition. I heard doctors in the Uk believe that being overweight could be caused by a virus. BBC NEWS | Health | Can a common virus make you fat?

Note: Ive never eaten pork rinds. I just know it's one of those couch foods along with chips and whatever other new fangled snacks we have nowadays.

I have a hard time figuring out if Neapolitan just wants to **** with us or if he truly doesn't understand what it means to use a figure of speech.

Anyway, helpful advice for those who don't know: not eating is worse than eating in terms of dieting. If you skip meals, your body will go into conservation mode so when you actually do eat, it will immediately store the excess as fat. If you have a problem with weight, try eating small (and healthy) meals more frequently. This will keep your metabolism moving, and your body will be more inclined to burn off the excess or get rid of it altogether.
