Would You be Tempted to try Drugs if They Were Legalized?
 

Did a search but nothing came up that was useful/relevant/recent.

I'm involved in a debating society and one of the questions we were asked is this, in regard to drugs legalization: would you, assuming you've never taken drugs before, be tempted to use drugs should they be all legalized?

The argument from many people in my group was that legalization would lead to little or no increase in drugs users, arguing that those who really do wish to use whatever substance are not deterred by legality.

Any opinions appreciated!

Prohibition is the only thing in my way at this point.

Same. Of marijuana anyway.

Why would legality of something be an issue if you wanted to do something?

1. Wanting to be a law abiding citizen and showing respect for authority.
2. Fear of getting caught and the unjust punishment to follow.
3. Setting an example for others, especially if you have a family.

Those are my 3 reasons.

All the people I've ever known that have done drugs, myself included, did not place enough significance on the legality of it to dissuade themselves from doing them. Unless you're overly paranoid or lack common knowledge, it's not hard to dismiss the idea that any time you obtain and put an illegal substance in your body a S.W.A.T team will bust in through the windows and arrest you.
I think most people who get busted for drugs (personal use type situations) end up in that position secondarily, after stupidly getting caught breaking some other law while in possession of drugs.
Unless you're a high level dealer who's being watched, I don't think a person should have any concern about whether they'll get busted for smoking a joint or something in their basement.

Personally, I think people that use legality as their sole excuse for not doing drugs are actually more afraid/unsure of the drug itself than they are of possible legal consequences. I don't think most functional, intelligent people really think their chances of getting busted are anywhere near as high as let on.

Not for me, no. I've been around it many of times and they have asked me if I'd be interested, and I guess I'm just not. I've seen people under the influence and it doesn't look like anything I want to be involved with. I like stimulation. Whether it be through music, fragrances, or food. That's good enough for me. I also think it would set a new bar for stimulation, and everything else would almost be boring in comparison. All I ever hear from a friend of a friend, "dude this song would sound insane on weed".

I am going to try LSD next month, and it is illegal. I smoke marijuana on regular basis and it is illegal. Legality has nothing to do with it.
