Puerto Rico Considering Statehood

Oh hey look, another thread on American politics!
So here on November 6th, we had a presidential election and the legalization on marijuana in two states. But under our radar and across the water Puerto Rico held a vote to apply for statehood. It's too close to tell right now, but if this passes all that the island would need is congress approval to become the 51st state.

I don't think it's going to happen, at least not right now. It doesn't seem like a large enough percentage of Puerto Ricans want it to pass.

Bah. It will be really noticeable. 51 states would fuck up the whole pattern. If we add Puerto Rico, we need to split California into two states at the same time because 52 stars will fit better.

We'll just let Texas secede like they're always threatening to do.

Oooh we should cut that whole hellhole from Fresno to Modesto out.
Or maybe make Oakland a city-state!

The problem with Puerto Rico is most don't know English and I doubt right wing people will be happy if this becomes the 51st state.

The Batlord 11-07-2012 10:14 AM

Great. More Mexicans.

There are more Puerto Ricans living within the lower 48 than on Puerto Rico itself already, :(

Guybrush 11-07-2012 10:19 AM

Regarding the flag, perhaps they could just squeeze an extra star in somewhere there's space?

No, 1/24 venusians are excluded from the data.

Everyone here is irish on St. Patricks day.

Why do nearly all Americans I meet give me 200 years of family history always claim to be from a country they've never visited anyway?

I can't think of any other nation that does that.
It's like you're ashamed of it.

I'm English, Dutch, German and Native American supposedly. In the end i'm just some white anglo saxon with a jaded view on life. None of this other stuff is important. I've been to England and France. I don't consider myself French though.

You've met Americans who know 200 years of their family history? That's pretty rare.

Well, I'm pretty sure that my family only came to America about a hundred or so years ago. I definitely don't consider myself Irish by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm still only a few generations removed, so any Irish cultural influences aren't gonna be completely gone.

I understand but I am speaking about the country Puerto Rico itself. It can't be a US state because most (like 93 percent) don't know one English word. I mean I don't mind this becoming a 51st state but as I said, many Americans especially Right wing ones will be upset.

JustJunMC 11-07-2012 02:21 PM

I know that New Yorkers will like this idea =)

All the boriquas can have family come in and out easily since it is American now

Do not forget New York is one of the most diverse states that America has faced. Many whites, Many jews, Many Africans, Many blacks, Many hispanics, Many Asians all together. It is one unique diverse state.

They have also reduced crime quite a bit. I heard in the 70's and 80's New York was really rough.

Well they better hurry up and make a decision, the likelihood of being a 51st state isn't going to last forever.
