Sounds like the police took justice into their own hands. Setting fire to the cabin and then preventing Chris from leaving, it'd only be appropriate for them to be wielding torches and pitchforks. We'll never know if he tried to surrender before, by some accounts he was "pushed back in" whatever that means, but there weren't any news cameras around to capture what happened.
