i wanted to propose a system and see if people could find security holes in it... that was the direction i tried to steer the thread in but nobody besides fiddler seemed interested in entertaining hypotheticals.

see i don't discuss things cause i expect to change anything or cause they seem important/relevant to me. i use them as a sort of game or puzzle.

so where you might go through the list of possible topics and check them off one by one, i see if i can't find a new way to approach any given topic.

you people just need to get on my level, then we can have some fun.

so to expand on that i think the whole hypothetical gun control realm has a lot more potential to it than lets say abortion or gay marriage... as those are mostly issues where two opposing sides with two conflicting set of morals try to undermine/destroy the moral system of the other...

guns are a more pragmatic question. so i've brought this up before i think but another fun gun scenario is the whole proliferation of 3-d printed weapons thing. a lot of people like to dismiss this scenario as it's not happening right this second cause 3-d printing is still in its infancy. but if the technology did eventually mature to the point where anyone could easily print a lethal and effective gun... then the whole approach to gun control legislation would have to be rethought.

instead you'd have to focus on either a) controlling access to 3-d printers or b) clamp down on internet file sharing. which is the presumed means by which people would access the directions to print guns.

right now we live in a world where the internet is relatively free and unmanaged... cause relatively speaking this whole internet thing is still pretty young. meanwhile the things in our real lives outside the web are more stringently regulated. you have to pay for more or less everything, and it's relatively easy to enforce that.

as time goes on and technology becomes more integrated into our daily lives it seems inevitable that the state will eventually engineer ways to clamp down on and control internet traffic, and access to electronic networks. or else the state will become increasingly irrelevant as the years go on.

Are you talking about variety of crime or quantity of crime? If you consider the post as a city (and it might as well be considered that way) at any given time we have a population of anywhere from 175,000 to 250,000. This is made of active duty soldiers, reservists, civilian contractors, family members, retirees, and civilian employees. We have barracks, houses, & apartments all ON post to the military & civilians who choose to live in Army housing on post. To put that into perspective for you, the City of Raleigh has a population of ~431K.

So as far as day-to-day functions and operations, we do anything a civilian cop would do: traffic stops, speed enforcement, citizen aid, road side assistance, and investigating general crime. We get most of your run of the mill crime such as theft, assault, DUI/DWI, and DDC (drunk/disorderly conduct). But we also deal with military-specific crime such as soldiers who are Absent Without Leave, Conduct Unbecoming of an Officer (or Conduct Unbecoming of an Enlisted Solider), repeated uniform violations, insubordination, repeated uniform violations, etc. For instance if a Corporal decides to tell a Captain to go f*ck himself, we'd probably get called to enforce disciplinary action on the Corporal in a court martial (if it went that far).

As far as quantity of calls, on average the company responds to ~1500 calls in a 24hr time period. But remember, a lot of these are traffic assists, general garrison duties, gate/range duty, etc. Anything a civilian cop would respond to in the civilian World, we respond to in the military World. For instance if the motorpool needs to move some tanks, they might would call for a temp. road block. If one of the gates gets backed up for this reason or that, we'd get called to redirect traffic to other gates. If there's an accident, we'd investigate in conjunction with CID to determine what actually happened.

Murder is possibly the least common, followed by drugs, then sexual assault. It's guesstimated that that one in five soldiers will be sexually assaulted at least once during their career in the Army. Unfortunately, however, sexual assault is rarely reported in time enough to actually reach a conclusion. Most sexual assault cases in the military remained unsolved because the victim will often time wait too long to report it. Perhaps due to fear of retaliation, or consequences to them. And by the time they DO report it, there's no evidence left and the case remains open.

While drugs have happened before it's not out of control. For instance, most of what we see drug wise is for instance joints in cars coming onto post. For the most part, by vehicle searches and utilizing the bomb/drug sniffing dogs, we can catch drugs before they make it onto post, which is the goal (to maintain a secure environment).

As far as say murder, that usually doesn't happen. We've had a couple of suicides (nothing recent) but remember this is a smaller pool of people, so there's generally a smaller mind set. In order words, we try to weed out the murders/psychos before they get onto post.
