I ain't gonna go giving my tree a name! :yikes:

djchameleon 12-07-2016 09:17 AM

My tree has arrived in the mail. Only takes about five mins to set up. Should be done shortly then I'll post a pic.

Edit: to join in on the conversation.

Two things that bug the hell out of me: people saying "Happy Holidays". WTF? It's Christmas dude! Nobody says "Happy Holidays" about Thanksgiving or Easter, do they? Why can't people just say "Happy/Merry Christmas"???

Also, "this holiday season"...? **** right off pal!

I lead with Happy Holidays all the time. It's just easier that way. I rather not say Merry Christmas to someone that doesn't celebrate it. Happy Holidays just lumps everything all in one and is still a nice gesture. I end up catching myself lately when I say Happy Holidays then the person says Merry Christmas back with a heavy tone. I'm like whatever Merry Christmas too. Christians and your kind get a stupid attitude over it.

No but it should be this way: if you're a muslim you celebrate the Haj or Ramadan or whatever, if you're not you don't. If Christians or others suddenly decided to celebrate it do you think they'd change the name of the festival? So I'm not saying only Christians can celebrate Christmas, but if non-Christians like me do, then they should accept that it is a Christian festival and does not need to be blurred into "happy ****ing holidays". After all, if you're uncomfortable with Christmas, Xmas does just as well. I just don't see why of all the religious celebrations it's the only one that has to be tippy-toed about in this annoyingly PC-let's-not-offend-anyone way. It's annoying. If you don't want to celebrate Christmas, don't. If you do, call it what it ****ing is!
Rant over.
For now.

Are you going to stop and ask every single person that you want to wish a Merry Christmas to what their religious preference is so that you can say the right corresponding holiday? If you aren't then just say Happy Holidays like the rest of us!

That's what my pre-lit fake one is supposed to be, but it's more of a glitter bomb than a tree. I call it a Mike Douglas-Comes-Home-From-The-Strip-Club Fir.

I can count ten other reasons too.

Frownland 12-07-2016 11:02 AM

Louis CK, Bill Burr, George Carlin, and Doug Stanhope are all from the US, so one of the reasons is because we're genuinely funny.

Over here the default is Happy Christmas, so no. "The rest of you" only applies if you're American. I'm not.

Merry Christmas here. Never met a single person here who says Happy Holidays.

Same. If "Happy Holidays" is an American thing then it's not from my part of America.

No jews need apply. ;) I don't personally know anyone who's jewish. I just never heard anybody in Ireland ever say anything other than Happy CHristmas.

It's really only something that cashiers say. Hence it being a massive non issue.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 12-07-2016 09:39 PM

dude, frown, one more post.

Lisnaholic 12-08-2016 09:31 AM

As a celebration of religion, gluttony and materialism, I'm pretty indifferent to Christmas, but then I remember that lots of people, especially children and grandparents, get a lot of innocent pleasure out of it, so I guess that's nice.

Also, a time of goodwill in any form should be encouraged. Most of us have heard about this event, and that alone is almost enough to justify every Christmas before or since imo:-

Quote:

http://www.catholicireland.net/wp-co...14-truce-2.jpg
The Christmas truce (German: Weihnachtsfrieden; French: Trêve de Noël) was a series of widespread but unofficial ceasefires along the Western Front of World War I around Christmas 1914. In the week leading up to the holiday, French, German and British soldiers crossed trenches to exchange seasonal greetings and talk. In areas, men from both sides ventured into no man's land on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to mingle and exchange food and souvenirs. There were joint burial ceremonies and prisoner swaps, while several meetings ended in carol-singing. Men played games of football with one another, giving one of the most memorable images of the truce. Peaceful behaviour was not ubiquitous; fighting continued in some sectors, while in others the sides settled on little more than arrangements to recover bodies.

The following year, a few units arranged ceasefires but the truces were not nearly as widespread as in 1914; this was, in part, due to strongly worded orders from the high commands of both sides prohibiting fraternization.
I'm with Trollheart; to me the idea that Christmas trees or the word Christmas itself should be censored out of some notion of political correctness is ridiculous. If Christians across the world want to celebrate the lowly birth of a Palestinian Jew with delusions of grandeur I don't see why they shouldn't.

Frownland 12-08-2016 09:53 AM

"Censored" is not the right word. There isn't anyone trying to stop people from saying Merry Christmas or having (private) Christmas trees.

Lisnaholic 12-08-2016 10:01 AM

OK, thanks - I'm afraid I was a little too lazy to go back to TH's links and discover what the exact objections are.

The links mostly show a separation of church and state as opposed to overzealous politically correct people infringing on the rights of good Christians, except for this one: Woman told to remove Christmas lights to avoid offending non-Christian neighbours - Telegraph. However, it was only a request from one employee who ended up getting fired for it, HOAs are notorious for cracking down on bull**** due to histories of complaints or neighbour feuds, and it is from the Funnygraph.

Lisnaholic 12-08-2016 03:06 PM

Aha! I should've paid more attention to this, then:-

I think instead of a War on Christmas, we should start calling it a War on Mandatory Christmas, because that's the only thing the PC bogeymen have fought against.

I've always found it funny that Monkey plays so much grime in plug but only talks about David Bowie and Prince on the forum.

Cuthbert 12-08-2016 04:11 PM

I post about Outkast a fair bit as well but nobody will talk to me about Grime.

I don't blame them.

Which bit? Grime doesn't get posted about much.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 12-08-2016 04:21 PM

i don't post about grime because i don't think anybody else does, but i'm always up for hearing a good track or new project

also although i know a bit, it's mostly with just the bigger acts so i dont wanna look like a newb, it would ruin my persona.

It does get posted though, I think the most recent was when JWB was inquiring about it.

Someone asked about it in another thread as well. Maybe you just overlooked it.

Zhanteimi 12-08-2016 11:43 PM

Grime or Grimes?

Maybe. I do a search sometimes for the word to see if it's been brought up.
