56. Depeche Mode - Violator (1990)

One of the first albums I bought which I still listen to and love to this day. It stands as my second-favourite synth-pop album (some of you might be able guess my all-time fav), mixing up darkly gothic soundscapes with catchy pop melodies and hooks, and ending up with not only some deservedly smash hit singles, but also a remarkably consistent and vital electronica album to any library.
The best bits: The World In My Eyes, Halo, Policy Of Truth

55. David Byrne - Rei Momo (1989)

Another album I've had for many many years and one of the most important to the shaping of my current taste in music. Basically, it's a massively and admirably ambitious effort from David Byrne, as he takes the worldbeat influences which punctuated the final Talking Heads album Naked and not only utilises them extremely well but throws all kinds of Latin American and African folk styles into the songs. It's the album which got me into 'world music', and therefore a very very precious part of my music library. Not for everyone by any means, but worth a try if you're willing to look beyond the Anglosphere for good music.
The best bits: Dream Police, Lie To Me, Office Cowboy

54. The Specials - The Specials (1979)

Madness made the list, so I couldn't let the Specials miss out eh. Easily Coventry's finest contribution to ska, it's true to say that there are plenty of great songs on the followup More Specials and that Ghost Town is very probably their best song, but they'd never be quite so consistent over an album as they are here. The lyrics range from great little slices of social commentary to just mucking about with a pen and paper too. Goes without saying it's another one you shouldn't really be without.

53. Pulp - This Is Hardcore (1998)

Right from the word go (in this case, the opening track which goes by the name of the Fear) it's clear that the giddy anthems of the previous two albums have been dispensed with in favour of a much more harrowing, arty and (dare I say it) alternative sound. That's what I love about this album, and it's what really makes a band something special in my eyes - having the balls to do something different instead of churning out exactly what their audience wants and/or expects. This is Pulp's best album for me (His 'n' Her's and Different Class do give it a good run for its money though), showing the more fearful and paranoid side of Jarvis Cocker's writing and the versatility of the rest of the group. Bloody superb!

I have a soft spot for Violator and I just like it for what is. great synth pop. Halo is indeed a great track. The specials? what else can I say but fuck yeah! there is a Punk attitude running through the album and it has to be my favourite Ska album. I still have never got to hear This Is Hardcore. Different Class was good in parts and His N Hers is excellent. I should give this album a listen.

I am looking forward to the higher reaches of this list.

This Is Hardcore is definitely worth a go. I love His 'n' Her's and Different Class (except for that one song - you can probably guess what it is) to bits - they take some beating, and the third album does just that. Whenever you need the link, just drop us a line and I'll sort one out for ya.

52. Sabrina Malheiros - Equilibria (2005)

So, we've had Brazil's finest emerging songwriter on the list, now it's Argentina's turn. This lass peddles the same kind of smooth, bossa-nova sound that her Brazilian contemporary Cibelle does but, while not being quite so artistically adventurous as the latter, does make herself stand out by opting for some interesting synthesised rhythms to back up her own brand of folk. The results are a lot better than I've probably made them seem, and her debut Equilibria is an easy album to lose yourself in. One of the shining examples of modern-day South American songwriting talent.
The best bits: Love Sorte, Saudade Rio, Equilibria

51. A Certain Ratio - I'd Like To See You Again (1982)

One of the more overlooked albums of the 80s this. Following the departure of their lead singer Martha Tilson, the band made an album which focusses a lot more on the instrumental side of songwriting, the use of the lyrics here being few and far between. What we get as a result is a blend of ska, disco and some pretty funky stuff too (the album as a whole gets the kick-start of a sublime slap-bass solo for example), which in places sounds a little bit like a precursor to the acid house movement which was a few more years down the line. Another one of the sexiest albums ever this, and one of the most interesting works of the 80s. Not saying it's responsible for the Happy Mondays and the rest of Madchester scene, but ACR certainly helped things along a bit.
The best bits: Touch, Hot Knights, Guess Who
