Again, his thing.

f*ggot is on par with n*gger IMO.

I grew up in a 99.9% white world where f*ggot, n*gger, spic, and queer were tossed about casually by the adults. Makes me sick to think back on it.

Two people posting a Louis CK video for the sake of the argument. Not sure if I should be impressed.

What would you like us to do? Is there some pattern here that I'm not aware of? I agree his use of the word is inappropriate but this is the only time I've seen him use it. I can delete it. I can delete every offensive word anyone ever says on here moving forward but I suspect that would only achieve the goal pissing everyone off.

I'd just like to mention, the mods shouldn't have to do anything considering most swear words are censored anyway.

I think he's saying a curt warning --- "please don't use that insult" or something. It is a stupid thing to say: it in fact implies, whether meant or not, that such movies are for those of a certain sexual disposition. It's also offensive to those of us who have chosen to be piles of wood used to start fires...

Ehhh, I don't know. I was pissed off. I'm not really calling for any action but I just find it weird that JWB can say whatever he wants with no consequence. The fact that Chula, a recently newish member calls it "his thing" is evident enough that he throws the term around enough to warrant some discipline.

Also, as far as removing every offensive word, you know that's not where I was going. Using the term "f*ggot" to describe a movie is offensive. I know a couple people on this board who would be and most likely are offended by that. Myself included. "F*ck" and "sh*t" are not the same as "f*ggot*.

TBH, using the term that loosely is what pissed me off the most. It just shows and ungodly amount of ignorance in my opinion. If he started to describe a gay person as being a f*ggot, it would still be offensive as hell, but at least it would make sense. Calling a movie a f*ggot art movie just doesn't make any sense. It's just so unnecessary to use the term. Use these...

Stupid
Pretentious
Boring
Horrible
Atrocious
Lame

F*aggot? Nah, that's just childish. Sorry. Didn't mean to turn this into a political debate, but hey, at least it's in an acceptable thread.

People have been throwing off color remarks around a lot recently. Ever since Sansa got banned the general PC atmosphere of the forum has gotten MUCH more laid back. I highly doubt I would have gotten away scot-free with calling Roxy a "flat-chested beaner" only a few months ago. Do I appreciate JWB using that word in that way? Not particularly. But I know he's not a homophobe, so I chalk it up to comedic preference and move on.

Key 02-15-2015 10:15 AM

I made fun of Roxy for acting like she had autism a few days ago. Definitely a more laid back atmosphere if I can get away with things like that. And like Batty said, it was for comedic purposes.

I have no idea whether he's a homophobe or not. Frankly, that doesn't matter to me. You use the term for comedic effect. I wouldn't particularly use that word either but at least I know why you're doing it. Why the f*ck do you have to throw f*ggot into a description about a movie? Then, one of our members gets offended and the excuse of "Oh, I wasn't using it sexually" was thrown in. That's f*cking bullsh*t.

That's like saying "Hey John, I'm glad your mom is dead. OH JUST KIDDING LOLZ"

It's offensive that way he used it. I didn't mean to call out the mods. I actually like JWB. I just don't like that particular reasoning he uses often. I was just pissed.

Everything he said was scrutinized yet there are some members here that get away with murder. Don't get me wrong, I like JWB. I think that a blunt personality that speaks his mind is a good thing for this board, but using the term "f*aggot" that loosely is completely unnecessary and flat out disrespectful, no matter what the intended use.

Well if he didn't mean it sexually, then it's not bull**** if he says he didn't mean it sexually. I doubt he was saying that only gay men like art movies, or that only effeminate men like art movies. Sure he was using "faggot" to mean pretentious, but "pretentious" is a specific word, whereas faggot is an inclusive word that implies a more vague negativity--though an old-world dislike/mistrust of "non-manly" things is at least subconsciously implied.

Not justifying it, but demonizing vocabulary is dangerously close to being the thought police, so I prefer to look at it objectively.

Hell yes. My use of the word has tailed off drastically after high school, but in the right company, throwing around offensive words of all kinds is perfectly enjoyable.

I actually find it kind of funny that I've used the dreaded N-word out loud before (not in a hateful tone) and just last night Ki and I were thinking of hilarious insults with his parents in their car (e.g.; douchecanoe, knobjockey, cumdumpster, twatwaffle, etc.) but I have never, never in my life said "faggot".

I called one of my bosses at an old job an asshole before (to his ugly fucking face, no less), have openly used the word "cunt" to describe an unpleasant person, and will tell you exactly how the fuck I feel about something, you fucking piece of shit, but using homophobic language is off limits.

Agree to disagree I guess. I just think, for somebody who prides himself on speaking his mind no matter what, that using that word in the way that he did, and then backing off by saying he didn't mean it that way, is bullshit. I guess it just comes down to me not knowing why people would use that word for any other reason than what it means, an archaic derogatory word that puts down homosexual people that has no place in our society anymore.

assh*le, c*nt, and piece of sh*t are universal. The kind of offense felt with those words is WAY different than the kind felt with f*ggot.

You use that word and you are revealing something about yourself.

Never. Besides the connotation, it just isn't a very good word for releasing anger. Not like **** or ****. I just don't use two-syllable expletives in general.

Dude, cunt is almost as derogatory towards women as faggot is to gays. It implies that there is something so inferior about a certain people that associating someone with them is profane. It may not imply that women are unnaturally abhorrent, but calling someone a cunt or a bitch or a pussy is denying any sort of masculinity, which apparently is almost the lowest thing you can imply of someone (not to mention that faggot is often used interchangeably with those words).

It may not be culturally perceived as such, but besides the fact that women are a historically accepted part of society, what's really different about the implication? Calling someone a cunt means the same thing as calling them a faggot (unless of course you're just saying someone is gay.) What you're really saying is that someone exemplifies everything that is negative about not being masculine.

I like to call women assh*les when they're being assh*les. Takes the sexism right out of the equation.

He's openly Bi ffs. This is the kind of thing that should be taken to PMs.

Girls can call each other bitches. Black people can call each other nigger. Spanish people can call each other spics. That's just the way society currently works.

I would, but it just doesn't make sense. I used to call Sansa an asshole whenever I wanted to call her a bitch, just cause I figured she'd raise a stink over it, but it never felt right. You call a man an asshole. Right or wrong, it's just the way it is. So, girls are bitches. Sorry not sorry.

Words and ideas are what make us human. They're naturally powerful, not appointed.

Chula Vista 02-15-2015 11:21 AM

Top 10 worst words.

F*ggot rates pretty damn high.

DwnWthVwls 02-15-2015 11:24 AM

If they were naturally powerful they wouldn't shift in and out of offensiveness/relevance. Just because we are living in a time when everything is becoming more PC doesn't mean I'm hopping on the train. You know some people are offended by the word "dead" now?

Black Francis 02-15-2015 11:25 AM

C*nt is a real grimmy word, very few girls deserve it imo.

You gotta break the bitch mold to reach the C*nt status in my book.

I don't think ive ever used it on a female yet nor do i intent to cause it feels like a trigger word to make all hell break loose.

Really? Like how? Like, saying somebody is dead rather than deceased? Or like "passed on"?

DwnWthVwls 02-15-2015 11:31 AM

Yes, exactly. We were discussing transgender pronouns and political correctness in my argument and persuasion class last week and the word came up. There was a third term, metabolically "something" or some bull****.

It's a bunch of overly sensitive, overly medicated people who can't handle life because they are being raised inside of a fucking bubble. Have you looked at the DSM lately? It's pathetic, and these drug companies are making millions if not billions off of it.

While I agree with you in that regard, I do't think the same argument can be applied to the use of a word that is more often than not considered to be horrible.

It's funny, I'd never call a man a faggot as an actual insult, but if I were to, I'd feel less guilty than if I called a woman a cunt, even though I'm not actually as opposed to calling a woman a cunt as I am calling a man a faggot. I guess it's cause I'd never call a man a faggot as a way to insult his sexuality, but if I call a woman a cunt, I would be implying that she embodied everything that is negative about the bitchy female stereotype.
