The point is that if you're in a no-win argument with someone and want to back out of it before you say something you'll regret, you can Ignore their posts. Therefore you don't get angry about what they may continue to say to or about you. They also can't PM you and annoy you. The only real drawback is if someone quotes them, you can see what they said. Sometimes, in extreme circumstances, when someone just won't leave you alone and every time you come online they jump at you, no matter what, even if you haven't said anything to them, it's the only way to maintain both your sanity and your dignity (and avoid a ban).

I speak from bitter, bitter experience. Without the Ignore option here I would have ended up talking, shouting, screaming and cursing myself into a ban. Some people just affect me that way, no matter how much I try not to let them. They are, thankfully, very few and far between.
