Also, I'm not impressed with the route Pendulum have taken. I used to like them when they first started releasing. Not so much now. They've brought Jump-up into the spot-light but they've done it in by making it compatible with mainstream pop rock. I don't respect that kind of move. Do good things for a name, but don't change it. That's what I say. Still, most of the D&B noobs out there will categorize Pendulum's crap as "all of D&B" because it's most of what they've heard and not even realize what else is out there. I don't have a problem with Jump-up, but for sure these people need to be learnin' about Neurofunk, Techstep, Ragga Jungle, Atmo, etc.. because these are all true-to-form evolutions of early Jungle/Drum&Bass. Integration was never a part of Jungle/D&B and it never should be. It was always about breaking the mold and being different as a genre.
I'm all for progress in the genre, but when we start having a hard time differentiating from D&B and new Linkin' Park songs without vocals, we gotta stop.

I just typed all that crap to agree with you and expand on a specific pet peeve I've been nursing.

Read and learn noobs,Excactly what he said x1000

Could get some stick for this but I really like Pendulum including their newer stuff. I think that they created a fairly unique sound (please correct me if I'm wrong) and as long as they sound different to whatever is out there, then I'll continue to like them. I only really dip my toes into D&B with High Contrast, Sub Focus etc. so I'm not the most qualified person in that respect

I know that they've gone away from their roots so I can see why many D&B heads would turn against them, much like Tiesto and his new stuff. Then again, I don't really see them as a D&B act right now anyway (maybe it's the rock vibe) but more of a normal group with their own sound.

I also saw them live earlier in the year and only one word can describe it...epic! I enjoyed them more than The Prodigy and I never thought I would say that

not a fan of pendulum. pendulum is to d'n'b what chase & status are to dubstep (even though they made some d'n'b as well)

I also like pendulum quite a bit, especially songs like tarantula, hold your colour, and pendulum's remix of voodoo people. I think that regardless of whether you like pendulum's move towards the mainstream, their popularity will introduce people to dnb and help the genre grow. I know I had never really listened to dnb before pendulum and now im looking up more dnb artists and songs.

I think the problem arises when mainstream integration leads to a genre being so watered down and ripped apart to make it compatible and accessible by the mainstream audience that the music many people are listening to isn't even recognizable as its true form, and the roots of where it began are lost under layers and layers of bullshit.
I can respect it as a gateway, but if the producers go that route because they're following a subgenre's success story into the mainstream, then there won't be anything real left for people to discover after using that gateway.
It's potentially a gateway to nowhere, and the city left in the background is maintained by fewer and fewer citizens until there's nothing left at all.

The genre had it's heyday in the late 90's/early 00's with dedicated labels such as Moving Shadow pushing the genre as far as they could with easily affordable compilations (either 99p or £1.99p) that still failed to capture a major audience despite a major push via the inclusion of EZ Rollers who appeared prominently in the film 'Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels' .

The genre has evolved into 'Liquid Drum N Bass' which is a catch all for commercial beats that incorporate Dance music. Despite the efforts of a few artists, DnB is yet another casualty of an ever evolving scene that hasn't produced enough lasting albums to sustain it, although Roni Size is still eminently listenable.

The scene could be compared to Dubstep, which unfortunately has burned itself out already. Part of the problem is an international audience not Au Fait with the 'Dub' element.

LTJ Bukem is still an artist that should be heard outside of the confines of genre labels with his signature 'Kick Bass Drum' a very influential part of underground Dance music.

LTJ Bukem's Logical Progession series of albums are still staples of Dance music in my eyes:

Never really liked their older stuff, I'm not a jump up fan at all, and their new stuff is god awful. I'm more into my liquid tbh, and I'll always love jungle. LTJ bukem is great, and I'm a big fan of alot of Hospital stuff, medschool have been on roll lately, sick music was a great comp, not listened to future sound of russia yet.

And you've just gotta love danny byrd.

The VIP mix of shockout is great too.

Yep, it doesn't get much better than his Supersized CD, sooo many strong songs on there. Hospital rarely fails.

About Pendulum...all I can do is echo everyone else with, "I really liked Hold Your Colour, but not so much In Silica."

I do remember though, listening to Grooveriders radio show when In Silica came out. He was talking about all the DnB purists telling him how much they hated pendulum, and the way they were commercializing DnB. I can't remember it word for word or anything, but he sounded pretty upset about it and went something like, "Pendulum has created some of the biggest dnb tunes to come out recently, and have introduced so many people to the scene...Pendulum can do whatever they want...so you people can shut UP...just shuuuuut UP."

It sounded better the way he said it, but that was the jist of it. He made some really good points in his little rant.
On the other hand, what Freebase Dali said a couple posts up is very true as well, so /shrug

Just thought it was sorta interesting that one of the biggest figures in DnB would take that side of the argument.

Pendulum = Seksi drum and bass. I've seen them live twice, they made me want to make love to the speakers. 'Nuff said. In Silico may be mainstream but it's still appealing to me, as I'm not fussed that they became bigger. It means they come to see us more!

It's just different when you fall in love with something many years ago, and it grows up to become something you can't stand.
Not Pendulum in specific, as I was into drum & bass long before Pendulum arrived on the scene, but the general tendency for a genre to be right in its prime when you fall in love with it, then see it eventually fall to bits. I guess the most painful thing about it is that eventually, no one will make the kind of music you really dig, so you're kind of left back with just the things that are already there... and with no hope for anything new.

Pendulum did have some good stuff. I just don't like where they went with their talents.
But I guess you can leave all the old heads behind when you know you got a new niche to carve out of the mainstream, along with all the fans you'll gain.
It just won't be the same, true head fans. And usually the mainstream fans will be the first one to ditch when something new comes along and shines nicer, glitters more, and distracts them long enough.
