Girl Talk

I can't believe there hasn't been a single Girl Talk thread on here all year.

Girl Talk, for those who live under very large rocks, is a mash-up DJ who released Night Ripper earlier this year and a few months later got hyped by Pitchfork. The album is great, and the two times I've seen him live have been the most fun shows I've ever been to. Even if he only played for about 9 minutes the second time, because he invited everyone up onstage at a festival and security cut him off. :D

Check him out.

Night Ripper is what starts and ends my friday/saturday nights and is a corner stone to any great party.

enemyat_thesix 12-16-2007 12:55 AM

Not that great; single most overhyped electronic act this year. I completely blame Pitchfork. This is dance music for hipster scum.

First off, all the Girl Talk hype came about last year, so calling him the most overhyped this year doesn't really fit. Bullshit like Dan Deacon and whatever is the worst anyway.

Besides, it's basically impossible to dance to unless you hear it live, and it's not like he's the first hipster to make a mash-up. 2 Many DJs, Party Ben, etc. have been doing it for years, it's not like Girl Talk just invented some new form of dance music.

And in terms of "dance music for hipster scum," this is really no worse than listening to Ed Banger Records or any of that. It's all the same kids listening to it pretending they know shit about EDM.

Im downloading the tracks from myspace now. It does'nt sound too bad. Will be fine to play at work.

The hype started last year, which means it took til this year for the hipsters to get ahold of it. Not only are Girl Talk's albums bland and lacking depth, I've heard from several friends that his live act isn't anything to write home about.

The scene must be different where you're from, but the majority of kids here who listen to Girl Talk know nothing of Ed Banger, or any electro-house outfits with the exception of Daft Punk and Justice.

ps: At least Dan Deacon has an original sound; no other electronic artist sounds like him. Girl Talk can't even compose his own music.

Maybe things are different in Boston, but Girl Talk isn't anymore popular here than he was last year. And yeah, anything that's highly blogged about and danceable gets lumped into the same scene. It's the same kiddies selling out Girl Talk shows and Justice ones.

Dan Deacon isn't any more original or interesting than any other bedroom IDM producer, I could find a million guys on Myspace who sound just like him. He just sells himself as this really wacky guy making totally wacky music that hipsters just eat up.

And pre-Night Ripper Girl Talk did make his own Glitch beats, and it's not like Night Ripper didn't take him any effort. IIRC it took him over a year to put all the samples together, etc.

enemyat_thesix 12-17-2007 07:16 PM

i'm not saying it didn't take work; i know it took a lot of effort to mash the samples, especially considering the extensiveness of the ones he used.

my two problems with Girl Talk are:

1. I can't get into his music
2. Everyone seems to think he is the savior of EDM, along with Justice. Meanwhile, respectable artists like Milanese and Distance go under the radar

I don't know anyone that considers Girl Talk the savior of EDM, and most people who call Justice EDM's saviors are clueless enough where it's easy to not take them seriously. Most of it is just hyperbole from people who probably said the same thing about LCD Soundsystem and other dance/rock groups.

Milanese and Distance are, along with Skream, Burial, and a few others, some of Dubstep's most recognizable names. I know both their albums got quite a bit of hype and critical acclaim even outside of the Dubstep scene, but I don't follow it too closely.

enemyat_thesix 12-18-2007 04:46 PM

dubstep doesn't get recognition outside itself. sure, pitchfork gave untrue an 8.something, but that was just out of obligation

I don't just mean from Pitchfork, they're so obviously clueless about EDM (with the exception of Sherburne, and even he's kind of a tool). Dubstep gets a ton of recognition from magazines like XLR8R and Wire, regional scenes popping up all over the US, increasing popularity in Techno (Ricardo Villalobos, Modeselektor, etc. playing it), and now a Fabriclive by Caspa & Rusko. I don't think its fair to say that you have to be really involved in Dubstep to enjoy it anymore. Maybe a year or two ago, but its popularity is only growing.

Girl Talk is the ultimate dance party - I actually discovered a lot of terrible but catchy hip-hop songs through his mashups.

PsychosisD 12-21-2007 02:50 PM

What's with all the girl talk hate? Sure it''s not the most original music and he's technically nothing more than a mashup artist. But his selections are impeccable, ranging from indie bands to mainstream hip hop and he used a pixies track for one of his songs and that was when I was sold.

and you don't have to hate everything the hipsters like on principle.
sometimes it's the music that shines through

joyboyo53 12-22-2007 10:40 PM

I saw him at funfunfun festival in austin this year and it was pretty good. I was not a fan based off their myspace page however, so i suggest checking out a live performance if you want a feel for him.

Night Ripper owns my liiiiiiife. it's just like one, long, awesome song

cabangbangq 08-01-2008 02:07 PM

Girl Talk?

Am I the only one hear that likes them? Think of this:

A guy sampling modern mainstream music (Laffy Taffy, Julez Santana) and combining them with stuff such as Nirvana, the Pixies and much more.

It's basically remixes and mashups of all sorts of songs and it's awesome.

To continue my last post. Wow. Girl Talk is awesome. I'm not one thats into hip hop or dance music for the most part, but this is awesome. I love the mash ups and being able to tell songs that I've heard.

You are not alone, he literally mixes everything...I think Night Ripper is very, very good.

cabangbangq 08-01-2008 04:46 PM

As many people hate it, I think it's ****ing awesome that he's taking some of the ****tier songs ever created (some Lil Wayne, that Laffy Taffy song) and mixes them into something new and creative. I gotta give him a ton of credit for that.

He esentially takes the diaherra filled with plums from my dog's ******* and makes into fuel for a car.

that one dude 08-01-2008 05:38 PM

I think there is really nothing special about this guy. I'm not saying he's horrible, but I dont see whats so inventive about what he's doing. Theres nothing new or fresh about mash-ups, it's not like it hasnt been done over and over beforehand. He's simply the lucky one who's getting all the hype for it. On the other hand, I wouldnt mind seeing him live, I'm sure it would be one hell of a party.

FireInCairo 08-10-2008 02:04 AM

just awful obvious mashups

"obvious"?

Complain that it's awful if you want because it's personal preference. But "obvious"? There's nothing obvious about the songs he chooses to mash-up. 95% of the songs he chose for Night Ripper had never been put together to before.

that means 5% have been put together....?
Just after a while you get sick of his electro crunk theres nothing new about mashups...not to mention most of them on night ripper dont really work...

vinylhasmorefun 08-19-2008 04:34 PM

Ya know..I can't really get into Girl Talk and I don't know why. I mean, they seem right up my alley, and I can appreciate the talent behind Girl Talk, but it gets on my nerves too easily.

dallasrockscene 10-16-2008 09:34 AM

girl talk

does anyone else like playing "identify the song" when listening to girl talk? i'd like to find a list somewhere of each and every song he uses

You've been here a couple of months and still haven't learned to search before opening a new thread?

Girl Talk.

heard of him? the mashup DJ? all his songs are so catchy. night ripper is an amazing album. it's an hour of non-stop dancing.

that's how he was live. i saw him at all points west in jersey city. he had 50 people on stage just dancing and making the crowd go wild. there was confetti, beach balls, balloons, crowd surfing...the whole shenanigan.

FireInCairo 11-03-2008 05:26 AM

Try the search function, I think you shall find there is already a thread on this guy.
By the way, Welcome!

Kevorkian Logic 11-03-2008 06:57 AM

yeah, a month or two ago he came to Chapel Hill.

Tickets like sold out in 2 days, it was pretty impressive.

turboduck17 11-09-2008 09:04 PM

i just wanna sayyy

that those mashup dj 's cant do **** or make music, so they jus take other peoples music and mix it all up with more of others peoples music.

imean ***'on

i could do that on my computer if i wanted to

FireInCairo 11-09-2008 10:50 PM

I think you'd find it a bit more complicated than that.
By the by, mash-up deejays are still rubbish.

turboduck17 11-10-2008 07:16 PM
