What would you classify as emo? (electronic, hardcore, bands)

Everywhere I go , everyone seems to be calling EVERYONE emo, just cause they have bangs or listen to certain bands or some stupid **** like that. What I want to know is , do you think this is right? What do you classify as "emo"?
