Rolling 2008 Dance Singles/EPs/Mixes Thread
For all the dance music that gets hyped up by Pitchfork, CMG, etc., if it isn't an album it's generally overlooked. ITT we can talk about releases that might have slipped through the cracks, but are definitely worth mention. Starting with:
The Juan Maclean - Happy House This is The Juan Maclean's latest single, and it's fantastic. It has Nancy Whang (LCD Soundsystem) on vocals, and samples Dubtribe Sound System's excellent "Do It Now," another great, but often overlooked, track. Bobmo - 3000% Yes EP I know a lot of us are into Ed Banger/Kitsune/etc., and Bobmo has been releasing on Institubes for about a year now. His previous stuff was pretty Bmore-influenced, but 3000% Yes is basically 90s dance as revisioned by a French teenager. It has a lot in common with Surkin's latest tracks, "Next of Kin" and "White Knight 2," probably because they DJ together all the time. Ellen Allien - Boogybytes Vol. 4 This is the latest mix in Bpitch Control's Boogybytes series. Modeselektor's mix last year was a little uneven, but Ellen Allien's is good all the way through. Highlights include Martin Buttrich's excellent remix of Friendly People's "Music Is Improper" and Gaiser's "Withdrawal," both appearing on the latter half of the mix. Jay Haze - Ass to Mouth This song, as the title implies, is supposed to be "dirty." It isn't really much more than a really great house track, though. Haze's beatboxing is more funny than anything else, and the "bounce that ass" style vocal he samples sound pretty tame compared to any 90s booty/ghetto house. Also, the B-side is another great collaboration with Ricardo Villalobos (see "Free Your Mind," their release as Social Being last year, for proof that these two kick ass together). |

Cicada - "Maladies"
available for free download from their website, this experimental electro album is both groovy and mellow Does It Offend You, Yeah? - "You Have No Idea What You're Getting Yourself Into" the most refreshing electro-rock band i've heard in awhile, i think (hope) these guys are set to blow up. sounding like the bastard child of hot hot heat and the teenagers, these guys can write dance-floor anthems and sing-a-long rock songs alike The Whip - "X Marks Destination" not much to say, funk electro-rock with a great sense of groove. especially great basslines on this album |
Aren't DIOYY pretty big already? Their songs have been making the blog rounds since early 06, so I always just assumed they were at least fairly well-known at this point.
And I might be thinking of someone else, but don't Cicada make really terrible big room House? |
no one at myc ollege knows a **** about edm, so i don't really know what's "big" or not. everyone here just masturbates to indie rock and froths at the mouth about how Radiohead are the BEST BAND EVAR, after the Beatles, of course.
plus i'm not 21 so i can't go to clubs, they have been making the blog rounds but i mean so have 10,000 other bands. DIOYY are signed to Virgin, though, that should get them some exposure I don't even know what "big room House" is. all I know is i like Cicada |

Big room house is basically what it sounds like. Ultra popular and commercial house music played in large, trendy clubs. Think of Ministry of Sound or something like that. |
i base things as being big as in comparison to the mainstream alternative music scene. i only got into edm about six months ago, so i am not yet fully saturated into the culture or scene yet.
and Cicada definitely does not make big room house i'm also surprised to see you use the horrendous blanket term "techno" :/ ps: here in boston it is close to impossible to sneak into 21+ events. everywhere cards pretty rigorously |

i wouldn't consider it still a genre. it has fragmented into countless subgenres at this point; i'd contest there's no such thing as techno, just like there's no such thing as electronica (the difference being electronica never was and techno isn't anymore)

But techno is on the almight list of genres so it has to be a genre right now. Its two genres above my favorite genre: "tough guy"
