Does anyone like Breakbeats anymore?

I am looking through this forum for the first time and have realized that not one thread so far is in anyway related to Breakbeats! Maybe it's because I am from Florida and it was huge here that i like it so much??? It just seems to be more danceable then techno or drum and bass.... I like all EDM, don't get me wrong but a good breaks track is what gets the crowd dancing. what are your opinions on Breakbeats, I'm curious.

jackhammer 06-10-2009 09:49 AM

I really wish my knowledge of Breakbeat was more comprehensive as I love this genre but I can only give the same band names out:

Freestylers
Krafty Kuts
A.Skillz
Stanton Warriors
Freq Nasty

as you say it's the big beats but within an easily digestable frame. A funky huge bass line is the business.

Here is a Breakbeat compilation I made a few weeks back that you are welcome to download and listen to:

I was into breaks quite a bit around 2001-2003, there's some great stuff there. What I got into was apparently referred to as nu-skool breaks, which eventually started veering too much into progressive territory for my taste (Hybrid and such). There was this awesome internet radio station based in San Francisco I discovered at that time and the stuff they were playing completely blew my mind. I mean completely...I would listen to it all day every day at the office. I wish I could remember the name, all I remember is it was "something K" or "K something". I vaguely remember two of the DJs being either DJ Felix or Felix the Cat (not Felix da Housecat) and DJ Clockwork or something to that effect.

These days I rarely listen to house, breaks, or drum n bass and listen mostly to IDM-related stuff...when it comes to electronic. But a good breaks mix sounds pretty good right now.

Edit: A bit of googling leads me to Felix the Dog...I think that was him. Originally from the UK apparently.

Dude, I'm a breaks lover.
Except, and I hope you're not offended by this, I can't stand Florida breaks... U know, the generic sounding simple electro breaks? Not sure if that's what you're into. I also don't like vocal breaks in the jazzy nuskool vein.
I'm all about bassline breaks, nuskool, glitch, hardcore breaks.. Basically anything dark and dirty, with the exception of progressive, which I take as pretty as you please.

There's nothing like a booty break to make you shake. Breakbeats have just crossed over into a median music. Everyone is mixing them in between their dnb, electro, edm, techno, hiphop, basically to get to their next track they use breaks as a sort of comic relief. It's sad really.

sidewinder 06-11-2009 12:41 PM

I like the dark and bass-heavy stuff too, and don't really like the Florida breaks as much either.

I'm jamming to some breaks right now, inspired by this thread. :hphones:

I used to have this on CD but let a "friend" borrow it (among other CDs) and never got them back. :banghead: Thank god for the internets.

I'm having a breaks party all by myself up in here. Found a few Felix the Dog mixes last night, just started one up. Beats are sooooo fat, now I really miss listening to breaks all day. :D

sakuradrops915 06-11-2009 11:48 PM

I am so happy to see every one respond in a positive way. Truthfully, i was expecting people to tell me that they didn't like breaks anymore... as for the type of breaks i like personally...

I am a chick so I have a special place in my heart for vocal breaks...as well as florida breaks because, like i said earlier, i am from Florida lol. I absolutely LOVE dirty breaks and hardcore breaks...Some of my favorites right now are

Dj Fixx
Infiniti
Santana
Deekline and wizard
Screwface
C-vaughn
Dj Trashy
Baby Anne
And OLD dj Icee

to name a few... It is really sad the the scene here in Fl has died away to house and hip hop.... :( I get so hyped though when I hear a good breaks track, Thanks again for all the positive feedback...

Unrelenting 06-12-2009 06:30 AM

Don't know anything about this genre, but I'll be looking into a lot of these aforementioned bands.

sidewinder 06-12-2009 03:18 PM

Now playing: Chris Carter - Apply the Breaks (DJ mix) on the UK label Botchit & Scarper.

This is awesome. :hphones:

I used to live in Florida when the Breaks scene was kicking down there. We used to go to The Amphitheater in Ybor City and and there were always breaks. Man, I remember that place... the oxygen bars, girls dressed up as sexy rabbits dancing on poles, rotating dancefloor, radio station broadcasting live on Saturday nights.
That was a fun place.

sakuradrops915 06-15-2009 06:46 AM

Yea, those where the days...they sadly made Amp into a hip-hop club. it was called Club 360... haha, because of the rotating dance floor. But recently (thank God) they went out of business.... Now the tech guys that used to work for Amp bought the place and redid the inside. It is reopened as Tantra, named after the sat night parties that Amp used to have... the dancers are back, Glow Boy and Glow Girl are back and so are the bubbles :) The place is jammin on sats.... I just wish they would play more breaks and less House... It is definitely worth a visit if you plan on being in town any time. ATM Tony Faline is the resident DJ but I hear they are trying to get Keoki...

I think the general trend of the above-ground electronic scene is shifting back towards house in Florida, so you're gonna see more DJs with that on their plates. It's still surprising though, because they don't call it "land-o-breaks" for nothing, and Florida pioneered it's own style of breaks.

Might just be the club though. I don't know. I haven't lived in Florida for 6 years, so I don't really have a feel for the state of the vibe anymore.

I gotta say that I was really disappointed with this :( Have you heard Meat Katies Fabriclive mix? That's one damn fine mix.

sidewinder 06-15-2009 11:33 PM

Damn, sorry you were disappointed. Anything specific about it? I played it again this morning and one minor complaint I have is that some of the tracks are too long...it could benefit from being mixed up a bit more. But I like most of the tracks.

I have not heard that Meat Katie mix. I know the name from back in the day, not sure if it's just from having heard a few of his tracks on other mixes or if I've heard any of his mixes.

I will give it another listen. My main complaint that nothing really stood out and there wasn't enough big fat basslines for me or memorable hooks.

Hmm. It seemed to have a good amount of fat basslines to me, but then again we've got different pools of experience when it comes to breakbeat, maybe this is more what I'm used to. Both that and lack of hooks could have something to do with the long-ish tracks, too. If it was more mixed up, more emphasis would be placed on the basslines and hooks...then throw on the next track. I got my hands on that Meat Katie mix last night and will give it a spin soon.

Listening to a Rennie Pilgrem-curated mix right now, Rennie Pilgrem Presents TCR50, disc one mixed by DJ Tamsin. I've had this for many years and one thing I always noticed was a lack of fat basslines in most of the mix (both CDs, actually).

breaks are awesome. so much more interesting and danceable than the repetitive thudding trance crap which seems to be plaguing nightclubs nowadays.

I am playing this mix now, on the last track actually. I think it's a fine mix but is far too progressive for my taste, when it comes to breaks. Many atmospheric slow-downs (the kind of stuff that always bored/irritated me when I was actually on a dancefloor) and the type of vocal samples typically found in progressive house. I own several progressive breaks sets and like them to a degree, but in general I prefer my breaks a bit darker, colder, more clinical I suppose. Stuff usually labeled as nu-skool, funky, or UK breaks, all of which work best with an abundance of fat basslines. This Meat Katie mix feels a little too warm and accessible. And honestly I feel it seriously lacked fat basslines as well. But I do find it more enjoyable than the TCR50 mix I posted above...which suffered from a bassline deficiency but didn't offer much in their place.

There were definitely several tracks that jumped out at me, and the mix is good in the sense that it's mixed well and flows well. I didn't really dislike any tracks. It's just not what I'd reach for when I want to hear some breaks. Kind of the same way I prefer garage, deep, funky, or jazzy house over progressive house. Any type of progressive electronic brings in elements of trance, and I'm not a fan of trance for the most part. I like it more raw and less atmospheric, if that makes sense.

jackhammer 06-17-2009 01:17 PM

There are elements of Progressive in there and it's not strictly a breakbeat mix. I guess I look for vocal work too and sometimes a completely left field track dropped into the mix. I like Stanton Warriors and DJ Format mixes too.

I'm listening to that Chris Carter mix and it's still not doing a lot for me. Although I am digressing I do like Chill and funky house but don't have nowhere near enough of it. Got any recommendations?

Hey Jackhammer..
You ever heard this mix: Loki - Tricked Out (volume 2)?

You would love it.
The breaks are so dirty and mean. And I think he used some D&B tracks and slowed them down to Breakbeat tempo, so it's extra dirty. Your mother wouldn't be able to wash them breaks off presentably.

If you're interested, I can upload.

jackhammer 06-18-2009 01:57 PM

Yeah I would love to hear it please and any break mixes you wanna up-I'm game!

sakuradrops915 06-18-2009 07:25 PM

i cant believe i forgot to mention someone...or some ones i should say... Jackal and hyde....now thats dark and dirty...

I checked out that Chris Carter mix as well and it wasn't really the type of breaks i'm interested in...I have a friend that only spins UK breaks and I have to say, the difference in sound between those and the ones I'm used to from Florida is huge. UK is very progressive sounding in general... I miss the Masquerade days :P

Saw Jackal & Hyde live several times.. they never disappoint. One of my first records bought from a shop when I first started the DJing thing was Jackal & Hyde - Angel Ass.

Oniondan 06-27-2009 07:50 AM

Im trying to get in to a little breakbeat. Been listening to D&B for years but trying to broaden my horizons as far as DJing goes.
