Dubstep vs. Electro

It seems everywhere I go recently I'm hearing that Dubstep is where it's at, so I looked it up...

Will someone please show me why Dubstep is so popular and post a decent mix. =/

Freebase Dali 09-04-2010 08:39 PM

That graph shows absolutely nothing without a legend.

Sorry.. Trance is blue, Electro is red, Dubstep is orange.

Schizo, I learned about Dubstep through MusicBanter, and I must say that I really love some of the songs because of the pulsing anger, the exciting viciousness, the heavy, sinister, ominous feeling of looming disaster, and the wild abandon of them. They feel like something is being destroyed.

Okay, I realize I must sound like a psycho killer now, but that may be nothing new! ;)

I guess the songs appeal to the gleeful pessimist in me. I'll look through my old posts about Dubstep and see if I can scrounge up a few songs that I especially like so you can hear what I like about them.

I'm sure some of the electronica gurus on here (like Freebase) can make a great mix. I'd like to hear it, too!

Exeggcute :3 09-05-2010 05:17 AM

Yeah same. I hear too much "I listen to proper Dubstep" crap, I'd like to see what people think really shape the genre, because I have no idea.

There's also the coolness factor, to be honest most of the people who I meet that tell me "I'm really into Dubstep" are saying it because they think it's a cool genre to be into. God knows why, but that seems to be the case. It quickly becomes evident they know nothing about it. I get the occasionaly "oh yeah that remix of In For The Kill" and that's it.

I got Skream's second album "Outside The Box" which I thought was pretty good!

Schizotypic 09-05-2010 11:33 AM

Yeah, I'd love to see some video's people like. This is the closest I've found:

Still not entirely my thing, but I guess it's not bad. Anyone else got some stuff I'd like from this genre?

Exeggcute :3 09-05-2010 11:43 AM

This is my favourite Skream track. I'm sorry I don't know you, so I don't know "what you might like" :P

Schizotypic 09-05-2010 12:22 PM

That's actually not terrible, it's just pretty different. Thanks, anyone else? \

oh, and @Vegangelic: ya you sound like a psychopath.

SATCHMO 09-05-2010 12:29 PM

Burial seems to be the only dubstep that I can really get into. I wish there were more in the genre that are as good as he is, but unfortunately, in my opinion, no one even comes close:

Schizotypic 09-05-2010 12:39 PM

@Satchmo: I got two minutes into that song and heard no drop, so I got bored and stopped. I think were listening to this stuff for entirely different reasons, but that's all right.

On the bright side, for those of you who like what I do in this genre, I finally found something a little closer to my electronic tastes... tell me what you think:

music_phantom13 09-05-2010 02:16 PM

Here is the greatest dubstep that ever has been and ever will be recorded:

Anything Joker touches is golden.

Also, some others...

Dubstep is popular for me because it's everything I've always wanted from electronic music. It's heavy with filthy ass beats and just gets me rocking, no matter what. None of that pretentious be-bop cliche techno stuff involved.

Oh yeah and BASS, BASS, AND MORE ****ING DIRTY BASS!!!!

Although I do like Burial they are rarely ( or him in this case) rarely talked off in Dubstep terms and reside in the trip hop/ambient 2 step genre.

Dubstep is generally viewed as having heavy basslines that are generated electronically as opposed to organically with basic drum tracks but he is still a great entry but then again the emphasis is sometimes on the very nature of Dub which was also about reverb and echo with sporadic basslines

If you want something similar to Burial, then I definitely recommend Clubroot:

As for recommendations for Dubstep and the claim that it's it's the 'coolness' factor. Well I can understand that in a way as it's a new thing but over here in the U.K it's virtually been and gone due to the fickle and transient nature of Electronica here so only the tunes with 'big' sounds may be what people are looking for and not the fact that the scene has begun to move on already.

I can only really recommend the usual suspects from here as in:

Kode 9 & The Spaceape:

Benga:

Bands like:
2562
Disrupt
Distance
Dub Terror
Milanese
The Bug
have some great tracks but a solid album seems to be elusive.

Jackhammer, you resolved a lot of my confusion regarding the genre. I went on a big dubstep hunting spree after hearing Burial for the first time about 6 months ago, and I couldn't get over how much I hated the synthetic, non-organic, agressive bass of everything I ran into. That Clubroot would have placated me for a while. I loved it. Now I'm gonna' explore some 2-step for a while.

I personally like a lot of the synthetic bass sound as I like a lot of Electronica and Dance but I know exactly where you are coming from as Burial can give a false representation of the genre.

The Burial/Four Tet track posted earlier (I'm sure It was first mentioned in one of my journal posts) is probably more what you are looking for.

Yeah, I have it. I have just about everything he's ever worked on.

CanwllCorfe 09-05-2010 07:38 PM

You may also wanna check out Synkro

Submerse

and Balam Acab (or rather keep an eye out for.. he's just recently come out with his first release)

SATCHMO 09-05-2010 08:45 PM

Canwllcorfe - those we're some pretty dead on suggestions. You've helped me out a lot.

Exeggcute :3 09-06-2010 11:36 AM

I also like this sort of thing:

CanwllCorfe 09-16-2010 05:05 PM

Skrillex, a.k.a. Sonny Moore, produces both Electro AND Dubstep.. and is pretty damn good at it.

Roland 09-19-2010 10:07 AM

Listen to some real dub like Burial, Breakage, Distance and Clubroot all produce ambient dark atmospheres and the bass lines are really special.

ThePhanastasio 09-22-2010 06:29 AM

I heard this dropped in a set, and it was great. The drop is sick. Really good stuff.

Another one my buddy has dropped in his sets before when he used to spin parties in Boston is kind of odd, but ultimately pretty sweet.

Yes - this is a genius track, as is the original.

Mrd00d 02-08-2011 08:30 PM

and Distance is my favorite. Benga is dope, Excision Skream, Flux, etc., but Distance is king in my book.

We had fog roll into town for like 4 days a couple weeks back, and with the foggy ambience/neon lights it was the most fitting music. Creepy, but powerful.

Turn Distance UP!

stillmans39 02-24-2011 08:23 AM

don't go near Borgore.

Joy Orbison, James Blake, Darkstar, Sullie Shanks are all doing big things on the UK scene

Roemilca 03-04-2011 03:32 PM

I agree with stillman, Borgore is just pure shit.

EvilChuck 03-04-2011 03:50 PM

I like Datsik, Excision, the combination of the two, Mt Eden, Nero, Skream.

This was a great song (and still is)

I know exactly what you guys MEAN, BUT its not universally true. Borgore is 90% trash, sure, but that's cuz he's like Lil Wayne of dubstep... puttin out loads of **** seeing what sticks. But I do have some good tracks

henry 03-06-2011 02:31 PM

burial
clubroot
benga

Skrillex is unreal. One of my favorite producers for sure.

CanwllCorfe 03-23-2011 02:35 PM

Yeah I just wish he'd change his sound a bit. It's like he's taking out a page from Deadmau5's book.

Husky McDump 03-23-2011 04:14 PM

i think that Wolfgang has more to do with both of their sounds they way they are. Wolfgang Gartner is so underrated.

Oh absolutely. I thought the first Skrillex song I heard (his remix of Rock That Body) was actually him.

ARobinson 04-26-2011 01:18 PM

Thanks guys for the posts...it's good to learn about dubstep after being in the dark. I heard Britney's new album has some in it?

Phantom Limb 05-03-2011 11:08 AM

Gold Panda's pretty cool.

StampTheWax 05-07-2011 04:27 PM

Post-dubstep

I'm going to throw post-dubstep into the mix. Dubstep producers are experimenting with less bmp allow more artistic freedom. Much easier to chill to aswell.

Google Stamp The Wax for a new music blog which gives some banging examples, which are part of a growing new scene in the UK.

Axiom 05-11-2011 12:17 PM

I think it's becoming so popular because of all the different types there are.. It can be extremely hard or really nice and soft. I've head many different styles of it so far. Plus it can be mixed with any other Genre of music. Brittany Spears, Snoop Dogg, and Korn have all worked with a dubstep artist. 3 extremely different types of music, but they also all keep the feel of the original genre instead of just being considered dubstep in the end.

But I do feel like the entire world woke up and felt "I can do it too." So now it might be hard to actually find something really really good that isn't already played out.

I thought this was interesting..
