Help finding ambient tracks

I usually find youtube compilations by searching "chill music" and following recommendations but can't find producers that focus specifically on this type of sound. A lot of the tracks within the compilations don't sound like this one. I love playing video games to this kind of music and would love to find some producers who focus on it specifically.

Any recommendations or suggestions on better ways to find it?

What genre is this?

I love when it picks up slightly around 2minute mark.

Frownland 10-07-2014 01:08 PM

Check out Jefre Cantu-Ledesma. The Garden of Forking Paths is a fantastic album.

DwnWthVwls 10-07-2014 01:12 PM

Thanks Frown. I'll check it out.

Pet_Sounds 10-07-2014 02:04 PM

Try this:

Secede is a fantastic solo producer that works in genres similar to this. Thick fantasy sound design with atmospheric interludes punctuated by very memorable melodic sections. His latest full length collaboration with label buddy Kettel was amazing, one of my all time favorite albums.

You're going to have to rebuild this YouTube link, my account is still in no-link mode.

Kettel & Secede - When Can LP

Secede's discography is full of gems. If you like the above link and want more go check out Tryshasla, Vega Libre, and Bye Bye Gridlock Traffic, all full length albums.

Ninetales 10-07-2014 03:05 PM

^ heh was gonna suggest both Kettel and Secede good shouts.

would also suggest Loscil, Trentemoller, u-ziq, Solar Fields, and Deepchord Presents Echospace off the top of my head. You also might like the collab albums between Fennesz + Sakamoto. The piano in your example is similar.

Wpnfire 10-07-2014 03:09 PM

Yeah I like the ambience in video games as well.

I could recommend this Bruno Sanfilippo & Mathias Grassow but that only sounds like the first part of that song you showed, and it's mostly piano ambience, but some of the tracks on that album that have drone too. That's the only thing I have that is similar.

DwnWthVwls 10-07-2014 05:38 PM

Thanks everyone, wasn't expecting soo many suggestions I have a lot to listen to.

Trollheart 10-08-2014 05:16 AM

For something more organic, give Gandalf (seriously!) a shot

I enjoyed this when playing D3. It's a little monotone to listen by itself but great as background music.

Link was muted but I did a search on my own. I enjoy the few songs I heard. Haven't got around to all of it yet.

Listened to "Loscil - First Narrows" full album. Solid.

Also listened to half of "Trentemoller & Smile Cat - Second Life" I assume it's called. Some of this was a little too hype but I definitely enjoyed it other parts were spot on.

Great track. It reminds me of elevator music but on a whole new level. Thanks!

Goofle 10-09-2014 12:49 PM

Step 1: Go on a music site.

Step 2: Use whatever available search function and type in "ambient".

DwnWthVwls 10-09-2014 12:54 PM

Trollfle.. I'm not looking for just ambient sounds though. If you listened to the track I posted you would hear what I am looking for. Idk, what genre it would even be considered.

I have got plenty of straight ambient tracks from the "Soundscapes" music channel on my tv. I saw your name as last response and got a little excited that a good link made be here.. What a let down.

Goofle 10-09-2014 01:24 PM

Musical discovery is trial and error. Have a look around bandcamp or something.

Trollheart 10-09-2014 01:37 PM

That's a bit unnecessarily harsh of you, Goofle. The guy is obviously looking for help, and it's not like he's a one-post newbie. We know DWV, so why not help him out rather than coming off as a preachy dick, which frankly you are here? Everyone looks to you for recs and for your incredibly wide range of musical tastes and knowledge --- witness DWV's last comment --- so to dismiss him out of hand like that just doesn't sound like you.

We're here to help each other, yes, not to score points for being smart? I'm sure there are tons of bands you could recommend to him; why not try that instead of being so high-handed?

PS Sorry if that came across as a bit angry, but I know you and this is not how you usually respond to requests of this nature. Unless you have something against the guy?

I just don't expect this from you man.

Goofle 10-09-2014 01:47 PM

I simply explained how I look for music. That is literally what I do aside from being given recommendations.

DwnWthVwls 10-09-2014 02:27 PM

And yet you chose to explain what I already obviously know instead of giving recommendations a method you just admittedly use and what the thread asks for.

I'm not mad or annoyed but you could at least own the fact that it was a troll post. :D

Goofle 10-09-2014 02:44 PM

In fairness I only read the thread title. And I facetiously gave you a response. But it is what I do :D

It's no big deal as you said though.

I am not really big fan of ambient music, unless it comes is the darker/drone side so I can't really give you any recommendations similar to the tracks already posted.

DwnWthVwls 10-09-2014 03:07 PM

I'm open to some darker/drone suggestions if your feeling ambitious. I don't even know what that sounds like tbh.

@ninetales - Just finished the "Solar Fields - Leaving Home" album. Lots of nice sounds. Will definitely be playing more of it.

Goofle 10-09-2014 03:28 PM

Dying God (Suite) | Black Swan

Last track on the album but it's pretty epic.

DwnWthVwls 10-09-2014 04:20 PM

That is much more along the lines of what Frownland posted. Great for background but not something I'd listen to on it's own. I'll have to check out the rest of the track. Tx.

Best part of youtube is related videos. Just found this compilation:

Ninetales 10-09-2014 05:04 PM

^ if you like that and Solar Fields you should check out the record company they are both a part of, Ultimae. It's got tons of similar goodies

here's their bandcamp's list of albums that you can stream.

Trollheart 10-10-2014 04:39 PM

Solar Fields is pretty amazing, yes. Took a little time to get into, but damn good. Have you heard "Blue" yet?

DwnWthVwls 10-11-2014 03:01 PM

Is that an artist or a track by Solar Fields? If it was on the album I posted than yes I heard it. I didn't actually look at the song names though.

Trollheart 10-11-2014 05:14 PM

As far as I know, Solar Fields is an artist, one guy if I remember.
https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/i...awUBmCPA29dwwA

Edit: Oh sorry I think I misread. "Blue" is an album from SF...

DwnWthVwls 10-12-2014 11:12 AM

Just finished it Troll! Good stuff. I gotta go back and listen to some of the other artists still. I've been kinda busy lately.

Machine 10-15-2014 08:56 PM

First off the soundtrack to the game Minecraft is very pretty in my opinion and is almost the perfect background music

The Link:

Also The Flaming Lips did a cool 24 hour piece that has many amazing ambient moments in it along with some experimental stuff and a 20 minute really soft near ambient ballad as the intro. Not sure if its what you're looking for but its amazing piece of work that works great as audio wallpapet , but is interesting enough to actually pay attention to as well

The Link pt.2 Revenge of the link!:

Also the Disintegration Loops by William Basinski is an amazing piece of ambient music where the sound actually degrades over time a really amazing experience. Again falls into the audio wallpaper but interesting category.

The Link pt.3 Battle Of The Link:

Frownland 10-15-2014 09:38 PM

^x2 on Basinski. He's the ****.

Heard it about a three months ago glad I came across it. Listen to it when I'm doing homework or just chilling around the house.

Frownland 10-18-2014 11:59 AM

Also, on the note of William Basinski, you should also check out The Caretaker. An Empty Bliss Beyond This World is my favourite of his.

Machine 10-18-2014 02:11 PM

Will do I never looked into his work much farther than the Disintegration Loops, but I've heard good things.

Frownland 10-18-2014 02:12 PM

For the record The Caretaker is a separate artist.

DwnWthVwls 10-18-2014 05:43 PM

Nice recommendations Machine. I play Minecraft and I love that soundtrack. I skimmed through the Flaming Lips video (only part 1), I liked the sound and the singing went well. The Basinski piece was nice also.

I'm still on the search if anyone has any other suggestions. I've found a lot of great related music through youtube but most of it is just mellow electronic stuff more so than ambient tracks.

I've been enjoying a lot of stuff by "ThePsychedelicMuse" youtuber.

Yeah I love the Lips, but that song is a lot to take in at once

DwnWthVwls 02-20-2015 03:54 PM

I dig it. Thanks.
