New album is pretty shitty minus a couple of songs which are spectacular. The album just seems too crowded with guest artists, and not even very good ones ie Snoop Dogg. Also the beats on the album seem so lackluster and at time awfully generic.

Man their new stuff sucks. Bring back the old Gorillaz

Room Studio 01-03-2011 12:04 PM

? how so

In my opinion Plastic Beach is just as good as Demon Days. It is definitely better than Gorillaz the debut album because it only had a few good songs on it.

My Favourite tracks: Revolving Doors, Plastic Beach, Melancholy Hill, El Manana and Kids with guns.

I would not really classify them as being Electronica although I have no idea where I would put them.

YHHCraig 01-18-2011 12:00 PM

I would classify them as hip hop

Thom Yorke 01-30-2011 12:44 PM

Wow seems like the reception for Plastic Beach isn't too warm on here. I loved it, although not as much as DD. I think Pirate Jet might be my favourite Gorillaz song though. I can't get enough of it.

Paedantic Basterd 01-30-2011 01:04 PM

Yeah, I listened to Plastic Beach, chalked it up to me not enjoying hip hop, discovered Demon Days, loved it dearly, relistened to Plastic Beach, and chalked it up to just being a bit crap.

Ramirez 01-30-2011 02:01 PM

I like everything the Gorillaz have put out. At first, Plastic Beach threw me off a bit because the beginning of the album is very poppy, but the end of the album is excellent and I grew to like the beginning. I don't think categorizing bands really has much importance, especially a group that encompasses such a wide scope as the Gorillaz. So to the threadstarter: stop being such a ****.

James 02-07-2011 09:04 AM

So they broke up. But that means a new Blur album. So **** yeah.

Howard the Duck 07-22-2011 05:42 AM

how is The Fall, anyway?

i heard it's just Damon's laptop music

LoathsomePete 07-22-2011 10:56 AM

I found The Fall (2010) to be pretty mediocre as an album, however I thought the same thing about Plastic Beach (2010). My friend says my expectations for the band are far too high and that I shouldn't expect them to put out another Demon Days (2005) and just try and love what they put out in its own way. So my opinion is pretty biased because I'm comparing everything they're releasing to an album that was the equivalent of lightening in a bottle. I will say that it's pretty impressive that they recorded the entire thing on an iPad thought.

Mrd00d 07-22-2011 11:11 AM

I agree with you Pete. Their earliest work kicks the most ass. I haven't even finished listening to Plastic Beach all the way through yet...

Blarobbarg 07-22-2011 03:52 PM

Man there's a lot of hate for Plastic Beach. I like that album. Not as good as Demon Days, but it's still pretty awesome.

Howard the Duck 07-22-2011 07:13 PM

mang, I love Plastic Beach

OOS 07-23-2011 03:07 PM

I never understand why people dislike PB so much. Love that album. Though, it's definitely more of a "pop" album with an R&B influence then previous Gorillaz albums, which went in a far more beat driven direction. Still great, though. The Fall has some wonderful songs (Revolving Doors, Amarillo, California), but is obviously something that they recorded on the road.

Blarobbarg 07-23-2011 03:24 PM

The Fall was made on a whim on the road, almost entirely by Damon Albarn... completely on his iPad. I applaud him for his effort, but it really does show that it was just him screwing around while bored in his tour van. Bores me to tears, honestly.

Interestingly, a great friend of mine who dislikes Gorillaz but enjoys a lot of ambient music thought that what he had heard from The Fall was great. So I guess it all depends on what you're into.

I thought Plastic Beach was fantastic I enjoyed the whole journey theme a lot. Melancholy Hill, To Binge and Cloud Of Unknowing are all in my opinion fantastic songs.

I will confess to being a massive Damon Albarn fan and so am undoubtedly biased, I have PB on a par with Demon Days.

The Fall is a funny little album, not so much an album as a sort of experiment, they had a pretty cool count down to the release on the website giving out a little gift every day was a sort of advent calender thing. The album itself is alright I find it quiet listenable The Parish Of Space Dust is my favourite track on it, absolutely love it.

Howard the Duck 07-25-2011 12:07 AM

just got The Fall

will letcha all know what I think of it

Howard the Duck 07-25-2011 06:07 AM

^^ nearly finished listening to it

same kinda experimental aimless vibe as Think Tank

i like it

TheRealHimself 07-29-2011 06:31 AM

In response to the original question posted, I believe Damon Albarn once said Gorillaz play "Zombie Hip-Hop" or something like that.

Just gave Gorillaz ST another listen... it's been a loooong time since I stuck in on.

I'm not sure why, but while I used to only like a handful of songs off of it, and even thought that they were OK at best, I now think that the whole album is brilliant. I have no idea what happened, but I like what I hear.

SamGalaxy 05-15-2013 12:51 PM

This is an earlier track but its still a good one.

Gorillaz- On Melancholy Hill With Lyrics - YouTube

misspoptart 05-16-2013 07:34 AM

On Melancholy Hill ALWAYS reminds me of my childhood, and I somehow feel transported back in time and also, strangely, back into my mom's shoes as a single mom. Weirdness.
