Only heard these but they are indeed great.

I stopped paying attention to Pitchfork when I learned that they go back and edit their reviews and ratings to look like they were always ahead of the current.

wait, actually? i know they re-review sometimes and change scores, but do you mean like they actively do this without telling people?

I don't know to what degree they still do it, since they're under a bigger spotlight now, but they've deleted and edited reviews in the past. E.g., UNKLE's Psyence Fiction was initially given a 9.8 and that review went missing. They also panned Belle & Sebastian's The Boy with the Arab Strap (0.8) in a review that has disappeared. In the Aeroplane Over the Sea originally received a. 8.7 but now its a 10. There are a couple of others I've forgotten where the initial review was mediocre, then after the album exploded the review was bumped up.

My understanding of their current process is that every album gets a bunch of reviews and a range of ratings from their writers, then Pitchfork picks the Pitchforkiest review and runs with that.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 12-08-2016 02:26 PM

Huh. I stopped reading their reviews awhile ago because I'm so lazy I would rather listen to some review an album on YouTube, but that's still kind of upsetting.

Ninetales 12-08-2016 03:13 PM

p4k's tastes rarely align with my own, but I've listened to very little from this year so is there anything from this list that is "must hear" material?

Frownland 12-08-2016 03:14 PM

I'd say that the Autechre and Avalanches releases are.

yeah Autechre and Aphex Twin were the two that I recognized and figured id enjoy. Have never been a giant fan of the Avalanches first record, and heard this one was worse so I never bothered.

Frownland 12-08-2016 03:43 PM

2016 feels like it's been going on for decades.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 12-08-2016 03:44 PM

Aphex Twin and The Avalanches were among the loudest come-backs of the year, the latter didn't impress me. Among these 20 releases I'd strongly recommend Nicolas Jaar. Also if you like house music don't miss out on Omar S-The Best and Various Artists-DJ Koze Presents Pampa Vol. 1, both enjoyable records.

As for P4k reviews their quality often appeared questionable to me, and with what Paedantic Basterd said about them post-editing the texts they don't deserve much credit. Still this web-site can be useful to get the notion of what's trending.

No Adventure Club or Deadmau5?

Sad.
