10/10 for technique. Putting a plug into a socket which is set to the 'off' position is a safe approach and should be commended. Also, it might have freaked out the poorly-travelled on here, who may have never seen the UK plug configuration.

I did think of that. But at least people in the UK will recognise the plug and socket.
