The Bomb Game

---------------------------------------------
Stats:

"Microphone Fiend" Bombs: 0, Keeps: 2
"Acid Rain" Bombs: 0, Keeps: 1
"Biosfear" Bombs: 1, Keeps: 0
"Once in a Lifetime" Bombs: 1, Keeps: 0
"Slower" Bombs: 1, Keeps: 0.
"Another Day" Bombs: 1, Keeps: 0
----------------------------------------------

I've come up with an idea that will hopefully be some fun. It's also a great way to hear a lot of new music and see what others' think of your fav tunes. This is how it works:

someone will suggest a song in any style of rock that they love or that they think that the average poster on MB will also love. Now if someone doesn't entirely like it they say “bomb” (for filter purposes) and must write around 50-100 words (three-six lines) about why they don't like it and then add a new suggestion.

If you do like it then say “keep” and you don't have to add a reason why you like it but you can if you want to of course.

Rules

Once you see a current suggestion you must give your opinion of it. If you haven't heard it, hopefully the suggester will upload it (yousendit.com) for you if it isn't a well known track, or you'll have to download it. When you're suggesting it might be useful to briefly describe it as well.

As soon as there are ten “keeps” the suggester wins and um...get some sort of prize and so do the ten people who said keep, to give them more incentive. The prize is a secret...(mods help me).

This isn't a thread for arguing, the only posts should be keep or bomb posts. If someone wants to argue a particular post, please do so in a different thread or with pms. Mods please delete all argumentative posts.
The guideline for bombing is you pretty much if you would rate the song below a 5/10. So if you think it's okay/average, that probably isn't a good enough reason for you to bomb, but you don't have to absolutely despise it. A rating below a five means you dislike it for a specific reason(s) but doesn't necessarily mean you would never want to hear it again. Only hearing a track once is okay but it would be hard to complain over it.

e.g: someone has suggested smells like teen spirit

reply: bomb (smells like teen spirit)

I can't stand the boring melody and x and y, etc

suggestion: “Lithium” by Nirvana.

To make the stats meaningful, you can also give your opinions on past suggestions. But there still must be ten keeps before a bomb to win. Make sure it's set out like in the following example to avoid confusion:

Past Suggestion (e.g: "Biosfear").

Bomb/keep because...

FAQ

1. Isn't this going to go on forever? No one is going to be able to get ten others to agree with them here. I don't see the point with this since the person who wins could just be lucky having lots of potential bombers offline; it certainly won't represent the majority of the MB poster's opinions.

Hopefully it will go on forever, and the point is for fun.

2. But you could get your death metal fan who likes nothing but, and he will just bomb everything.

Don't forget that it's not that simple to bomb, 50 words is quite a lot, and hopefully each new poster will check that it's a minimum of three lines, otherwise they can disregard the post. They can also disregard the post if the three-six lines are just random statements, or any biased, immature remarks. But make sure you mention you're disregarding a bomb and give a reason.

----------------------------------------------------------
Okay I'll start with the instrumental classic from Norwegian prog-metal Gods.

“Biosfear” by Circus Maximus.

Bomb.

This sounds like, actually it sounds exactly like Dream Theater maybe a lill heavier. Maybe i'm just not a fan of this style called progressive metal but it just seems like they often sound the same with no individuality. It's an instrumental track and just seems like they are showboating with this song. I'm glad you chose one of the shorter songs Don, I'm not sure If I could last the whole 9 yards with the rest of the album. This song has one good thing about it, the drumming is impecable but that's about it.

Talking Heads - Once In A Lifetime

IamAlejo 04-12-2006 04:07 PM

You didn't upload it. How are we supposed to find it?

IamAlejo 04-12-2006 04:12 PM

Here I'll cut you off and we can do that one later hahaha.

Talking Heads - Once In A Lifetime

Don 04-13-2006 04:33 AM

Bomb (Once in a Lifetime).

For me to sustain interest, the music underneath has to actually change. If I only listened to the bass the whole time I'd start to go insane after subsequent listens. What also irriated me is when the lyrics kept repeating some nonsense. I wouldn't even call the vocals singing for the most part; it's just talking.
I'll be nice and suggest IamAlejo's.

"Slower" by Mineral.

Should this thread perhaps be moved to the Rock/Metal forum?

Same as it ever was;)

Don 04-13-2006 04:57 AM

cheeseman, we're up to "Slower" by Mineral. What are your thoughts?

Cheese 04-13-2006 04:58 AM

I was taking the p*ss

Don 04-13-2006 05:00 AM

C'mon let's keep this progressing, download it if you haven't heard it and tell us your thoughts. I'm actually curious to see your suggestion(s).

Cheese 04-13-2006 05:05 AM

And therein lies the problem. My sh*tehouse computer is having major difficultys with this, coupled with the fact I'm motherd beyond beleif isn't helping the situation much neithre

i may try it in the morrow

Cheese 04-13-2006 06:17 PM

I've had a listen to it and I'm afraid to say "Bomb". It's one of those songs that, to my ears doesn't seem to go anywhere. Basically it rambles. This coupled with the fact the vocals are extremely hard to hear over the backing.

Just not my thing, sorry.

mosesandtherubberducky 04-13-2006 06:35 PM

Well cheeseman didn't say a song so I guess I get to choose it.

Rage Against the Machine- Microphone Fiend

EDIT: This is a fairly good game Don props for that. Kinda like my get to know new music...today thread except people say why the don't like it.

Don 04-13-2006 10:35 PM

Cheers moses.

Keep (Microphone Fiend).

Although at times I can't stand Rage, they do have some memorable tracks - this being one of them.

hiu 04-14-2006 12:45 AM

Keep.

Don 04-14-2006 12:52 AM

If moses wins this this early I'm gonna kill myself.

hiu 04-14-2006 12:57 AM

Bomb

Current song is "Microphone Fiend" by Rage Against the Machine, with two keeps.

keep

Come on guys, this has potential of getting to hear some new music. :( It's no fun when no one plays.

Don 04-18-2006 03:53 AM

haha you can't keep your own suggestion. Okay I made up a new rule, since no one wants to give their opinions on Rage I'll suggest a new song, but it's not like "Microphone Fiend" is out of the running.

For everone who knows me here, they probably know I love Dream Theater so I think I should suggest a song of theirs. And I'm gonna go with "Another Day." If you haven't heard DT before it's probably the best introduction. What you get is great lyrics, great melodies, one of LaBrie's finest performances, beautiful keys from Moore, a great sax moment and one of Petrucci's most awe-inspiring solos:

Cheese 04-18-2006 04:14 AM

Don, I mean no disrespect here, but I'll have to say Bomb.

Sounds a little to Styx/Asia for my liking plus it was a little slow and the saxaphone didn't become it.

Sorry.

I can't include one because thie machine I'm using is acting up.

Don 04-19-2006 02:30 AM

haha you don't have to apologise. But yeah, your reason wasn't long enough to go as an offical bomb. Okay I'll suggest another one anyway. This is hard because I don't want to pick a long track and all my favs are at least ten minutes long. I'll go with the instrumental masterpiece: "Acid Rain" by Liquid Tension Experiment. For many, this was the track that got them into prog metal. It features Petrucci and Rudess of DT at near their best and one of my all time favourite drumming (from Portnoy, also from DT) as well.

It's only six minutres (and 128 kbps bit rate) so it shouldn't take long to download:

Cheese 04-19-2006 02:53 AM

I've got the same problem with a lot of mine. They range from 9 to 14 minutes mostly.

Cheese 04-19-2006 03:10 AM

Well, what can I say other than "Keep".

Do I need a reason?

Don 04-19-2006 04:09 AM

You sure don't. But I'd still like to know why. Did you end up hearing "Biosfear?" If you like "Acid Rain" you should like that as well.

I found it to sound very "Dio" era Rainbow and as I'm quite a fan of Blackmore's collaborations, it gets the nod from me. Plus I'd rate it as a good driving tune as I'm on the road a lot:thumb:

Plausible?

littleknowitall 04-20-2006 06:16 AM

so s this going anywhere? anyone going to post a new song?

Don 04-20-2006 07:27 AM

Why don't you give your opinions on any of the songs that have been suggested so far or suggest a new one?

littleknowitall 04-20-2006 07:58 AM

'cause im lazy like that, ill post one later.

Don 04-20-2006 08:27 AM

Good. I think the problem with this great thread is that most people on this forum don't like expressing their negative opinons on something unless it generates a **** load of arguments. So if we allow arguments in here, this thread will explode.
