Favorite search engine?

Which one do you guys prefer?

Burning Down 04-21-2011 10:34 AM

I'm going to say Google because it's my homepage and I use Gmail. So it's all there already.

s_k 04-21-2011 10:35 AM

I don't trust the google company. But whaddaya do...
Google.

Thom Yorke 04-21-2011 10:36 AM

I've never used anything but Google. It's amazing.

What's wrong with the company itself? Summarize please.

Google the Netherlands was sniffing for personal stuff via unsecured wifi networks whilst driving along houses for streetview. They got fined, but it's still a bit weird.
And then there's googleOS. An OS that's completely online? Very convenient for those who want to advertise or use your private data for... whatever.
Everything is google nowadays. They have our agenda, our video's, our houses

That's crazy. I don't have a problem with streetview, because I don't think it's any different than driving or walking around a neighbourhood and looking at people's houses or businesses. But the snooping for info from unsecured networks is not apt, in my opinion. I don't know if they were doing that here, but all the wifi networks that I use are secure.

s_k 04-21-2011 10:54 AM

Same here, but it sure gives me some doubts about Google.
And they even collected (not on purpose, they said, but they didn't delete it either) medical data, e-mails and bits of personal data...

The article says 'there's 5 hard disks stuffed with data from the Netherlands only'.
Gives me the idea it doesn't just happen here.

Haven't read it myself yet, but it may be interesting.

Inuzuka Skysword 04-21-2011 11:04 AM

Dogpile, Mooter, Kartoo?

I prefer Google because of its simplicity, and because of Gmail, of course, but there are others that can be more useful in certain circumstances.

s_k 04-21-2011 12:24 PM

Wait. 1452 postings and I've never seen you.
Have you changed your name? Who are you? :D.

I don't think they post that often.

emostreetguitar562268 04-22-2011 06:44 PM

I like Blackl.com. its like google, but darker and more energy efficient. for some reason it doesnt search images though, just the web. for images i like google.

NGPercussion 04-26-2011 06:12 PM

Google.

adidasss 04-27-2011 01:43 AM

I didn't realize people still used other search engines. I don't think I used anything else since it came along. Why would you want to, isn't it the most superior search engine out there, with regards to speed, quality of results? Not to mention the clean page, I couldn't stand the oversaturation with all sorts of bullshit of the other search engines.

crash_override 04-27-2011 01:51 AM

Tried other ones, but nothing can compete with the Spartan simplicity and efficiency that google offers.

ThePhanastasio 04-27-2011 03:39 AM

I like Google. And also - street view doesn't have my house!

I've looked - and also, I would definitely have seen them, and they definitely would have had a hell of a time trying to turn around and get back off of my hill once they were up there. It's something I've not even mastered in a small car.

Howard the Duck 04-27-2011 03:43 AM

Q : Is Yahoo better than Google?

A: I dunno, just google it.

Natdeftones 06-24-2011 07:59 PM

always google

[MERIT] 06-24-2011 08:07 PM

I always use Google, until I exhaust all of the pertinent search results, then I try others (Yahoo, Excite, Bing, Ask, etc) just to see if they come up with anything different.

Stacey. 06-25-2011 04:08 PM

Google. <3

Mykonos 06-25-2011 05:05 PM

Oh, Google, definitely. Back in the days before Firefox broke down for me (so about a week ago) it had Yahoo as the default search bar, and I couldn't stand it. Google cuts the crap and just gives you straightforward search results, whereas engines like Bing and Yahoo seem to throw completely unrelated results at me. Worst search engine? Kiwee, easily. All their links are basically links to the same search in another engine.

Dr.Seussicide 06-25-2011 05:06 PM

I don't think I'll ever use anything besides google... it's in our vocabulary for Christ's sake. Google has search engine monopoly any day.

Mrd00d 07-05-2011 01:13 PM

I still use Google, but I've found Google's reliability has declined steadily over the last few years. At it's original release, it was speedily efficient, intuitive, and did a great job figuring out what you wanted. But now I have trouble getting the results I want unless I really, really take advantage of "quoting things" and +terms, -terms, and even then...

Something changed with google, with youtube (since they merged), in their programming/algorithms me thinks, especially since they've blown up into the mainstream.

But don't know what to do...

On a somewhat related note to the subject of this thread, I just recently discovered that Alta Vista still exists. I don't think I've heard of anyone using that one since some time in the 90s.

adidasss 07-05-2011 02:53 PM

^^ Lol! I just googled hot bot (the very first search engine I ever used, back in the mid 90s) and apparently that one still exists too, although it uses yahoo as the search engine. Ah....sweet memories.

I remember using it around 2000/2001 before I got into Google...

Heh. I just looked up hotbot today too! It's hilarious how the design still looks like we're living in the 90s.

I used to use this one wwwaaaay back in the day. All I could remember was that it had a black dog logo and not what it was called, so obviously I googled it.

So did you find out what it was called?

Ha! There was totally supposed to be a link there somewhere. Only got as far as "copy" and obviously forgot "paste!" Anyway, it was Lycos.

METALLICA_RULES 07-06-2011 12:04 AM

Google.

BobLobLaw 07-09-2011 11:40 AM

I laughed when I saw the results. XD

cbbrown 09-04-2012 04:27 AM

No doubt Google is best

cyberball94 09-04-2012 04:56 AM

I use Google too. It's easier to find anything on Google than on any other search engines.:D

Dark Rebel 09-06-2012 02:31 PM

I guess it would be Google like blame near everybody else.

Plankton 09-07-2012 09:52 AM

I always thought AskJeeves was a friggin joke. Then they took the 'jeeves' off it, and cleaned it up a bit, but yeah. Google since 1998.

Psy-Fi 09-07-2012 11:21 AM

I used Google for a while, when I first went online, until I found out about privacy issues with their services.
A writer on a tech blog mentioned an alternative called Startpage. I switched over and have been using it ever since. It works just as well as Google for me and I don't regret the decision.
Once in a while (maybe 1 out of 100 times) I use Surfcanyon or Google, on the rare occasion when I can't find what I'm looking for on Startpage.

https://startpage.com/

Big Ears 10-14-2012 01:32 PM

Google first and then Yahoo. Bing has a good photo every day, but I don't like the search facility.

Has anyone mentioned Startpage?

Whiskey 02-04-2013 10:46 PM

Google, but perhaps there's a better search engine out there. That startpage engine that the guy posted....I wonder if its better than google.
