What's more hipster than wanting people to think you're hipster?

Exo wins.

Exo 07-07-2015 07:05 PM

I don't want people to think I'm hipster. I just want people to like me.

yea, you're right, listening to radiohead and lcd soundsystem are the sole criteria for being a hipster

good point mate

Goofle 07-07-2015 07:24 PM

If you look up any hipster related criteria then Frown actually doesn't really fit. Just being honest guv.

Be honest with yourself, is playing a guitar with some kinda twig stuck between the strings considered fashionable? No, it's not. Stop lying to your collective selves. He's not a hipster. He's just a pretentious c*nt with a fantastic moustache.

John Wilkes Booth 07-07-2015 07:31 PM

it is within the scene that he's in... which is an internet forum full of elitists and marxist jews

think outside the circle my friend

Goofle 07-07-2015 07:35 PM

In other words, you admit you are wrong. And then you prove to the world you are wrong by widening the goal posts.

This is a serious discussion. Fuck outta here with your bullshit.

Somewhere along the line the definition of hipster seems to have been altered around these parts. Know your history. Read a book.

dervish76 07-07-2015 07:52 PM

Where is the option for "anal beads"? I must confess that I am shocked to see it missing.

i take my definitions straight from google

books are the old way, we have electricity now

google is god

frownland is hipster

and so are you

Goofle 07-07-2015 07:58 PM

I am a special kind of hipster though. Pure and free.

John Wilkes Booth 07-07-2015 08:04 PM

hipster need not be a bad term

people hate being lumped into a group but actually there is power in numbers

people could learn a thing or two from ants

See, I disagree with this. I'm either a hipster or I'm not a hipster. Since I'm one half of the topic of this thread, I'm going to assume you all consider me a hipster in some tense. The definition you just gave us describes me in no way whatsoever. I don't follow sh*t. I've been dressing how I dress, liking what I like, and doing what I like to do since I was in HS. I've always worn beanies, flannels, and glasses. I've always liked photography and eccentric music. I don't follow sh*t.

However, I don't consider myself "not" a hipster. I definitely look the part. So either your definition is wrong, or I am in fact not a hipster. I'll let you people decide.

^problem with that, exo, is that every hipster that ever existed also claimed to be d original

in fact, striving for originality but still falling within a general demographic is an essential part of hipsterdom imo

but then i am going beyond google/god's definition, so i will tread lightly

I do believe posting in this thread has insured that I am in fact part of this discussion. A more pressing question is why so aggressive?

So if I conform to what's popular, I'm a hipster.
If I strive to be original and my own person, I'm a hipster.

That's not fair.

Do you know how many people that encompasses? Everybody can't be a hipster. F*ck, I don't even care that I'm called one. I just don't understand the definition of what constitutes one. The whole "hipster" image has been so skewed over the last seven or eight years that literally ANYBODY can be one.

Suddenly wearing any shirt that isn't the predetermined 3% of clothing nowadays that isn't considered "cool" constitutes being a hipster. Liking Apple is being a hipster. Liking old media is being a hipster. Driving an old car cause you're poor is being a hipster. Getting glasses is hipster. Growing facial hair is hipster.

FACIAL HAIR HAS BEEN GROWING ON FACES SINCE THE DAWN OF FUCKING TIME. IT MAKES ZERO SENSE TO CONNECT THAT WITH HIPSTER-DOM.

Unless of course, the facial hair person is only doing it to be cool, which he'll never admit too, so we're left with making assumptions about people which is fucking annoying and basically witch hunting.

This wasn't directed at you that much JWB. It's more of a rant.

Also, I need glasses cause I'm f*cking blind. I did not do it to be cool.

John Wilkes Booth 07-07-2015 10:29 PM

no... conforming to the mainstream isn't really hipster imo... it refers more to counter cultural trends

again, to quote googlegod:

a person who follows the latest trends and fashions, especially those regarded as being outside the cultural mainstream.

Exo 07-07-2015 10:31 PM

The whole thing just seems totally unfair to people. It's a childish thing if you really think about it, like we're in High School with cliques again.

dervish76 07-07-2015 10:33 PM

Is the label truly so repugnant that you had to write an entire essay about why it does not suit you? An honest question.

lol... not really, people just notice patterns because that's how our brains work. what's really silly to me is not wanting to be called a hipster because you want to consider yourself original. there's really no such thing. humans are social creatures and we regurgitate cultural memes without even thinking about it.

I'm not saying it doesn't suit me. I'm saying it doesn't make sense. Whether I like it or not, society has pretty much become obsessed with labeling people that, hence this thread. I don't give a sh*t people call me a hipster. Hell, I have some hipster qualities. I just don't understand why these qualities are connected with the term now. It seems like everything is hipster presently. Pretty soon, going to the gym is going to be hipster.

Also, if you felt I wrote an essay about it, you should read more. That wasn't an endurance test.

I'm not sure if you were talking about me specifically but I never stated that I didn't want to be called a hipster.

If you called me a fanny foo foo I'm not going to tell you you can't, but that doesn't mean I think it makes sense.

Sorry Mr. Debate. Didn't realize you weren't in the mood to discuss something.

Whether I stated it or not is the whole point. I didn't state it. I don't care if you guys call me a hipster. It literally means nothing. It just so happens to be a huge part of the present day vernacular and I don't find any logic in most of it. I haven't complained about it whenever it's mentioned in the member picture thread. I just brought the topic up. It doesn't make sense to me.

John Wilkes Booth 07-07-2015 10:48 PM

you brought the topic up specifically when you felt the definition i posted didn't apply to you

i'm sorry man but i know how to read between the lines. i don't know why you think i need you to state something explicitly in order for me to infer that sentiment from your posts

If you backed out of that any further you'd be in the next town over.

dervish76 07-07-2015 10:50 PM

Not quite, but how many people need to ask "why do you care so much" before you admit you actually do?

You're right. Two people on the internet called me out on what they think I think. I should just accept that.
