Northern Soul

Ok...to celebrate my 1000th post I've decided to make a thread on my favourite genre of music...NORTHERN SOUL.

Feel free to contribute (though I doubt anyone will).
Feel free to ask questions on this incredible underground Soul scene, that's been going strong since the mid to late 60's, in the Soul clubs of Northern England.

KEEP THE FAITH.

Congrads on 1000 post.

And to try to contribute:

Could you recomend some songs or artists to listen to?

Thankyou ^ you are now my mate!

Firstly, I'll explain what Northern Soul is, for those who don't know.

During the 60's in the Soul clubs of Northern England, the regulars moved away from the Motown sound in favour of the more raw uptempo spins some of the smaller labels were producing.

Consequently the demand for fast Black American Soul music to dance too (and the faster the better) meant that dj's had to go in search of rarer and more obscure material from the vaults of these smaller labels.

The scene developed a cult following that moved through the 70's, took a dip in the 80's, saw a revival during the 90's and has gone from strength to strength up to the present day.

Dj's are to this day, still unearthing 60s and 70's rare soul gems that had never before seen the light of day. Class soul that never even charted at the time, due to the saturation of bigger labels like Tamla Motown.

Classic Northern Soul ;
(off the top of my head)

Tainted Love - Gloria Jones.(later covered by Soft Cell and more recently by Marilyn Manson)
Do I Love You (Indeed I Do) - Frank Wilson.
Out On The Floor - Dobie Grey.
Epitome Of Sound - You Don't Love Me.
The Right Track - Billy Butler. ;)
There's A Ghost In My House - R. Dean Taylor (later covered by The Fall).

If it's fast and it's danceable and has a beating rhythm and has above all else, Soul...chances are it's a Northern Soul favourite.

Ok, now someone ask me what an allnighter is...

Yes they did, along with many others.
And thanks for asking.

An allnighter is the most exciting experience for any soul lover.
Doors open usually around midnight till 8am.
Strictly vinyl to be played only.
Non-stop dancing the likes you will have never seen before.
The dance style for Northern Soul was the forerunner and origin for Hip Hop drops and breakdance styles. Includes back flips/back drops and spins an ice skater would be proud of.
Speed was the drug of choice.

Dancing is only interupted for a live act.
Northern Soul dancers, dance alone...in fact they don't dance...they compete.

is the chess compilation cd "northern soul" a good start for getting into northern soul

1 Attachment(s)
Attachment 1149Do you mean this one boris?

Has some good stuff such as Landslide - Tony Clarke and Wade In The Water.

But why limit yourself to the chess label? Although it's a good a place as any.

If your interested check out It's Okeh Up North, a compilation of various artists from the Okeh label; Major Lance/ Williams And Watson/ Sandi Sheldon and Billy Butler.

Even better to start with would be - Northern Soul Allnighter.
A compilation of tracks taken from various labels. Everyone a Northern Soul anthem.

Now...someone ask me what the Wigan Casino was!
