Doesn't get any sadder than Billie Holiday's Strange Fruit.

All I Want - Joni Mitchell
God - John Lennon
Mother - John Lennon
The Needle and the Damage Done - Neil Young
I Wish it Would Rain - The Temptations (knowing the story behind the song is really what makes it sad)

Kind of an odd choice considering some of the generic choices people have been listening, but this song is the perfect example of the tragic romance... of video game characters.

That reminds me,

The Chemical Brothers - Where Do I Begin?

Very sad delivery of vocals by someone who sounds a little like a mix of the girl from the Cranberries and the girl from Sixpence None the Richer.

I might be showing my age here, but I've always found the Rolling Stones' "Ruby Tuesday" to be a real tear-jerker. Very upsetting song, in my opinion, but that might just be me transferring my own experiences onto the song.

Counting Crows "Round here" always gets to me....I always loved that line

"In between the moon and you
the angels get a better view
of the crumbling difference between wrong and right."

Iron & Wine - "The Trapeze Swinger"
it's actually really sad if you understand the lyrics
