Green Day's Genre

I know I sound stupid but can anyone tell me the genre Green Day is? I currently have them under Grunge but I have seen much different genres for them on this board, all different so I cant make a final judgment. I have checked out the [insert genre here]education threads and didn't see them on any of them. So can someone clarify? and please, I dont really care if you like them or not right now, I just want a honest, real answer to my question.
Mods: if you think this topic is flame bait, please close it, I don't want trouble.

sleepy jack 02-05-2006 04:46 PM

It shouldn't be a flame bait, you're just asking what genre they are. Old green day = pop punk. New green day = modern rock or pop rock. I suppose the new stuff could be considered pop punk, if you consider new blink pop punk also.

Mama Booze 02-05-2006 04:59 PM

I'd say pop punk.

Muzak 02-05-2006 05:06 PM

I figured there would be contriversy over it. So Pop Punk. If I would to post a topic about them, I would go to the Punk section? Thank you all.

Well, i'd go with the pop forum to be safe its where I usually put the MTV pop punk bands, but if you're going to make a topic twould be best to put it in here.

I'd say they're genre is sucky-poser-sell out ****. Atleast that's how I would classify them if I had them on my ipod or something.

Muzak 02-05-2006 05:30 PM

Oh, forgot about that thread. Thank you Crowquill. I am in you debt.

Thank you for not following the thread rules/request.

Muzak made a thread asking for an honest question, not asking for the band to be insulted.

SittingBehindYou 02-05-2006 05:35 PM

Thank you... I am entitled to my opinion. He got. I gave an honest opinion. Shoot me for, okay.

sleepy jack 02-05-2006 05:38 PM

Muzak said "I don't want trouble." with this topic, and a band's genre can't be "sucky-poser-sell out ****". Because none of those are actual sub-genre's in music.

Muzak 02-05-2006 05:44 PM

Indeed. I respect your opinions but I wanted to just know the genre. There is a time and place for a debate if they are good or not but this thread isn't that place and the time isn't now.
I have herd of them as Grunge (hence the genre I have them under now), is this true? what albums reflect this style?

I think it mainly reffers to that fact they had long hair and came out around the grunge period. Pretty much every band that didn't dress up fancy and played rock and had long hair was being labelled grunge.

youngbreaker 02-05-2006 07:45 PM

they came out in the 90's during the alternative movement. now they are practically pop

breaker

Merkaba 02-05-2006 08:48 PM

Their latest stuff is just as rocky as it is punky. And about 70% pop.

boo boo 02-05-2006 08:51 PM

Green Day are pop punk, duh.

But then again, pop punk is a loose term isnt it?...Oh if you are pop, you cant be true punk?

Everything by The Ramones has a pop quality to it, you cant tell me im wrong, they always use the formula that works for any pop song, a nice riff with a catchy as hell verse and even catchier chorus, and no solos to clutter things up, its about as pop as you can get...Listen to The Clampdown from The Clash, if that isnt what you call "pop punk" then i dont know what is.

sleepy jack 02-05-2006 08:52 PM

The problem with pop punk is. The queers are pop punk and new blink is pop punk. They sound nothing like, just like what booboo said. Its to loose of a term.

Tommyrocker 02-08-2006 03:50 PM

God I'm Great

i own everything green day have done from the sweet children days up until...ah-hem 'American Idiot' which we shall immediately pretend didn't happen but for a few songs. actually, nah it was pretty good that album.

Personally, i hate to bring an old topic done time and time again BUT, i'd agree with the general concencus, the old Green Day was almost certainly Punk (check i wanna be on TV - very punk) but now its that sort of music that any 12 year old can stick a black hoodie onto and listen at full volume and think he/she's different and rebelling. How can you go from Tre Cool lubing up a drumkit and anally cavorting it with class in 'Burnout' to......zzzzz...are we, we are......zzzzz....the waiting?!?

If i made a genre to put Green Day in, it would be f'ing brilliant.
Whoever said "I'd say they're genre is sucky-poser-sell out ****. Atleast that's how I would classify them if I had them on my ipod or something.", my god, you're a feckin eejit. perhaps you'd like to explain the term sold-out, or are you all out of monosyllabic SHITE?

hookers with machineguns 02-08-2006 03:54 PM

Punk is just another marketable label the mainstream is selling to kids, just like emo, indie, and hardcore. People still don't know what they're talking about.

Tommyrocker 02-08-2006 03:56 PM

Surely all genres are marketable to kids? even rap now..

Yeah, I believe you were right with pop!!!They used to have elements of punk rock, but it's recently a lot more in the pop category, peace!!!;)

Mama Booze 02-10-2006 12:01 PM

yea, THEY do, doesn't nessacarily mean they are.

grow up.

franscar 02-10-2006 01:40 PM

Today there was a Green Day question on Junior Mastermind.

They were referred to as a pop band. I'm not going to argue with John Humphreys, he knows his shít.

PerFeCTioNThrUSileNCe 02-10-2006 01:52 PM

they used to be pop punk-ish. now theyre just mainstream pop rock. thats the way i'd classify them.

They did?

They sound exactly the same now as they did then to me

PerFeCTioNThrUSileNCe 02-10-2006 03:31 PM

the albums "dookie" and "nimrod" have a little more of a punk inspired feel to them.

sleepy jack 02-10-2006 03:32 PM

The ones on lookout records, are way different from american idiot..

judas_priest 02-10-2006 06:24 PM

yeah, i'd class them as pop, although they're not as "poppy" as some pop music, so maybe pop-rock.

Power pop is what you are looking for. Sadly people stopped using that term in the early 80s

Mr Sensitive 02-11-2006 09:14 AM

Who cares?

TrampInaTux 02-11-2006 09:32 AM

Whoever is posting in this thread, that's who. And seen as you don't care, then I would advise not posting in this thread. Seems the clever thing to do, really, doesn't it?
