Wouldn't it be so much....

Wouldn't it be so much nicer if music didn't have a genre at all? I mean because everyone always fights over music because a certain "genre" is "sucky". People don't like music because it's emo or hip hop. now, obviously, not having a genre wouldn't solve EVERYTHING but maybe a few things.

What's everyone else think?

I think if the world only consisted of one race, what a boring world we would live in.
Same goes for music genres. Diversity is what makes music so cosmopolitan. I think it's good that people have different tastes, it makes for good lively banter.

If instead of arguing against a different kind of genre simply because a person doesn't like it, why not try to understand the reasons why some people like them in the first place?
Who knows, you (not you shatteredheartfallendream) could be missing out on something special.

I like a genre called Northern Soul, which nobody seems to share my love of (at least not on this site), but if only one person on here could get into it and feel it the way I do, then they would realise how much they were missing.

This is my mission here (although I wouldn't try to ram it down people's throats, despite those who obviously have no taste whatsoever) that and opening myself up to other music I haven't previously heard.

"Wouldn't it be so much nicer if music didn't have a genre at all?" No it wouldn't.

if youre talking about having all music the same genre youre dumb.
if youre talking about not classifying music, too late, havent you noticed that people name and classify everything.
i really dont care because anyone who hates a whole genre is probably ignorant

I agree with you, (wow the first time I didn't get bashed for my opinion) I mean I like ALL kinds of music. I haven't heard of Northern Soul either. Any way that you could give me names of bands to listen to, I wanna try something new for a change.

i think without genres i'd be less confused most of the time:) plus it wouldn't sway opinions e.g "i can't give that a chance its emo" or "i don't like it because its country" it isn't like this for everyone but it happens some times without people even noticing. a genre you particularly don't like, you see a band under that genre and your not gonna try listening to them...

jr. 04-17-2006 03:07 PM

There's two genres.

Music you like.

Music you don't like.

littleknowitall 04-17-2006 03:08 PM

now that's how it should be...

jr. 04-17-2006 03:13 PM

That's how it is for me. I don't waste my time saying 'this band sucks because they're not true punk, or hip hop or metal'. It's a huge waste of time.

If I like it, it's music. If it's not pleasing, then it's not. That's just my opinion. Someone else may love it, and in that case, it's music. To that person. There would be a lot less stress if everyone would just put their headphones on and enjoy what they like, without being bothered that it's not this or that. Just enjoy what it is.

littleknowitall 04-17-2006 03:15 PM

same here, but it's not always the case, someone gets 'emo is ****' drilled into their head 24/7 hears a couple of **** emo bands it'll sway judgement. unless your strong willed and do effectively form independent musical opinions ofcourse...

Theres nothing wrong with genres if it`s just to give you some idea of what something is.

It`s when people take it to the extreme & start argueing over sub genres & sub sub genres it gets stupid

Yes, I just started a thread for people who would like to listen to different genres.

That statement there, makes you my favorite noob ever.

There's nothing wrong with having different genres, and again, different races etc.

It's people who cause the problems, not the different classifications.

I just wish people were more open-minded.
