Would it be here, or not?

I got this idea from another thread. H.I.M. posed the question 'what would you listen to if rock hadn't been invented?'

That got me thinking....what if rock music really had never been born? What music out there today would, or would not be here? Would Emo be here? Did it grow from rock? What about other genres? Dance music? These are just thoughts off the top of my head.

Of course, the stuff that was around before rock would be here. Would it be more prominent? It would almost have to be, wouldn't it?

Just wondering what everyone else thought.

Seeing as emo comes from hardcore which comes from punk which comes from rock. Emo probaly wouldn't be here, but jeez, its kind of hard to imagine.

Come on, wouldn't you have invented it by now?

The girl next door screwing her boyfriend probably.

I`d be lost if I didn`t have rock music to drown that skanky little bitch out.

She's probably faking it...

My neighbors would be very glad if rock music wasn't around, I torture the poor people.

^ I feel slow, it took me like 15 minutes to realize that your avatar said L7, for a while I just thought it was diamond.

It's interesting to see the way things evolve. I'm happy with how the music scene has evolved but if it was different I doubt I'd complain, I listen and will listen to almost anything.

It would be hard to make an accurate guess but I would say maybe Electronica might be bigger and most likly a new genre will form from who knows where that is who knows what.

swim 05-02-2006 02:50 PM

:( I like this imaginary world where electronica is uber cool. It's huge but electronica people are few and everywhere instead of many in selected places.

I would imagine that nothing really different would have happened, it would have just skipped a generation, rock evelving from blues/classical/jazz. So it would have skipped the elvis and beatles period to the late 60's/70's progressive band like Yes and continued into the 80's from there.

EDIT: Thaught, it does work except for the technology of the time, dangit!

I'd probably be listening to some form of pop, blissfully unaware of how tragic that is.

I probably would've jumped off a building or something by now if rock music were never created.

Walking about the place very confused and without anything to relate to...

i do that when I'm rollin'! Seriously, without music we'd have developed (socially) very differently. Songs and poetry were the way to get educated back in the day. Hell, Shakespear made up words to make his writing sound better, developed alot of the English language right there.

I think its birth was unavoidable, it is a progression of music that is necessary to even stumble upon if you are experimenting with music and sounds and instruments. It is sad that "emo" is the first genre you are concerned with when here is every other one, but same thought I guess.

Haha yeah it is quite confusing!

Listening to soul and blissfully unaware of the omission of rock from music history.
I'd be happy. :)

C'mon not ALL pop is bad.

Michael Jackson and Prince for example. :)

explosions-in-my-pants 05-05-2006 03:12 PM

impossible rock music would have happened unless you can go all the way back in time to when the blues started and that never happened..

Your right. Michael Jackson, in his day, kicked major arse. I still find his old music pretty badass too.

swim 05-05-2006 03:36 PM

I'd be content listening to classical music. Johann Sebastian Bach wrote some pretty sick guitar solos.
