This is no ordinary Soul album, but a social statement of the turmoil, of early 70's America. Vietnam, drugs, social and civil rights issues are all addressed on this incredible album. It's no mistake the title 'Whats Going On' has no question mark. Ironically Berry Gordy didn't want to release this album, because he didn't think it had enough commercial value. Easy choice this...'Whats Going On'...Motown's finest moment. |
Ironically, Motown executives at the time called it a piece of sh*t, and the worst record ever made.
Shows what they know. |

Probably... I guess they were appalled by the concept of a motown artist not following the same old rules, go figure.

That album opened up new paths for Motown, that were badly needed. You can just imagine them thinking; "A soul concept album? It'll never work." |
I also vote for Marvin, but nobody has mentioned "The Ecology", which imo is equally as good as "What's Going On" (which I find the more predictable). Although, I would argue that it probably wasn't the first time artistic freedom of expression had been granted to an artist. This had already been established as an issue prior to the mid-70's, as I'm sure Ga ye must have refered to this point. But I am in no way arguing or contesting its controversial nature, god I don't need a debate on my hands...
