Back then you could do three squares and a room for a dollar a day in remote places in India. Healthy food, too. You could also usually find interesting books in English left behind by other tourists. I spent a lot of time reading instead of sight seeing there.

Who was it? Was it Charlie, Richard, or Alan?

I know this is pathetic but I don’t know. I didn’t know their names back then so it was like I was just shooting the **** with a guy in the band mostly because we were both foreigners.

I come here to bring back the age old fist fight that the A-side of Black Sabbath's debut is the best thing they ever did and so therefore the debut is their best album.

No idea either of course, but feel free to post anything you like in my recommendation thread (the confusingly named pitchfork one)

The Ridiculous Trio - The Ridiculous Trio Plays The Stooges (2004)

Quote:

A crazed tuba & trombone reimagination of the piercing punkadelic music created by The Stooges! Thrashing cymbals and bashing drums locked in step with unrelenting tuba riffs, reinforced by otherworldly trombone writhing and sliding and bending (just like Iggy onstage), sounding somewhere between a disheveled wah-wah guitar or a kazoo. Available for the first time as a complete album, it must be heard to be believed!

Olias Of Sunhillow was a pretty ambitious release even by late 70's standards. Revisiting it on some decent speakers and I find myself a little in awe of it.

Even tho I was never a Yes fan,
that Jon Anderson album caught me off guard
in a good way when I was sent a promo of it around '76.
I wonder if he's still working on that sequel, "Son of Olias." (not joking!)

uncle_salty 07-27-2020 07:38 AM

The Chicks' Gaslighter.

A quick review...12 songs, most of which are about Natalie Maines' divorce, and the last half of the entire album is one, long boring same tempo song.

Also, when the banjo & fiddle are actually heard (maybe 3-4 times in the album's entirety), they're relegated to merely towing the line of the song and don't have any prominence at all.

This is a boring album, and what made them a great band is completely abandoned.

They've removed the Dixie both figuratively and literally.

The little bits of beauty in between the mad dissonance make this one of my favorite DB releases.

Psy-Fi 07-29-2020 09:05 AM

The debut album from Taiwanese duo "Mong Tong" which was recorded in their home studio. Instrumental psychedelic space-pop with a chill vibe. It didn't make much of an impression on me during my first listen but I'll give it a couple more spins before I decide if it's a tosser.

Hardy Fox - Nineteen Sixty Seven (2017)

Quote:

Long time composer / secret member of The Residents, Hardy Fox released a vast amount of solo albums during his last few years on Earth. This one was the last album he released under the "Bobuck" name before publicly announcing his true identity. Although most of his solo albums were usually instrumental, Nineteen Sixty Seven features Hardy playing and singing some of the biggest hits of 1967 in his unique and twisted style.

He has such an intimidating discography. Do you have a top five or just five that you’ve taken to?

Dude111 08-03-2020 11:17 PM

I last got 3 records :)

1) Richard Marx - First album
2) Robert Palmer - Pride
3) Kool and the gang - Ladies Night

Every song is excellent on all three of these but Richard Marx is insane for 1987! (It could sound better but its OK)

On Side 1 I only did not know 1 song (Lonely heart) and on side 2 I hadnt heard any but They are all good too.....

Wow I think this is the latest record I have gotton that is so good!!!!

I mean R kellys double record (1995) sounds good but thats R&B and a PROMOTIONAL COPY so that one is probably mixed analogue on purpose.......

I cant believe all the songs on side 1!!!! -- I didnt recognise any titles (Except hold on to the nights)

Should have known better
Dont mean nothing
Endless summer nights

Oh my lord...... I cant believe this was in the dollar bin!!! (I guess they didnt think anyone likes Richee)

Awesome lil (or long rather) ambient reggaeton alb. Kelman Duran is second to one in their field.

The textures on this thing are incredible

I love OoS, my favorite of the 1976 Yes solo albums, narrowly beating out Chris Squire's Fish Out Of Water.

Homva "Afrizi"

Came across this browsing the Vanila label's soundcloud. Not 100 percent sure who's behind this, but I'm guessing it's either George Anyfantis (ANFS) or SAWF. Sounds more like the former, but the latter hasn't been putting too much out under his main alias the past year or so. Really minimal, rhythmic, droney stuff. For something on an old re-used cassette, the actual production on this release is hardly lo-fi.

I just picked up a vinyl copy of the second album from 'Kikagaku Moyo' originally released in 2014 and recently given a second pressing in 2020. All the $ I usually spend on shows each year has been piling up in my bank account, due to COVID-19, so I've been spending some of it on hard copies of albums to add to my collection.

Searching for Jerry Garcia is the second and final studio album by Detroit rapper Proof of D12, released on August 9, 2005. It was the only solo album that Proof released on a major record label before his death. The album is named after Grateful Dead member Jerry Garcia. The album's release date, August 9, 2005, intentionally coincided with the ten-year anniversary of Garcia's death.

Lothar and the Hand People - Machines: Amherst 1969 (2020)

Quote:

Lothar And The Hand People emerged as one of the earliest pioneers to mix electronics into rock, incorporating theremin and synthesizers into their sonic onslaught. Led by Lothar (a theremin) and his cast of digit possessing musicians wielding guitar, bass, drums, and one of the first (and largest) modular Moogs! This, their first ever live album, captures them with the passion and energy that can only come from a band’s final show before Lothar was forever unplugged.
