THE question...

So I was having a conversation with my girlfriend yesterday, brought on by a Razorlight video.

Her: Turn it off.
Me: No, I like this video, look at them dance! TEE HEE HEE!
Her: I don't like Razorlight. They are boring.
Me: They aren't very original, but they did help revive Rock n Roll in some small way.
Her: *GASP* THEY DIDN'T REVIVE ROCK N ROLL!
Me: Well, they helped to bring it back into the mainstream, along with the Arctic Monkeys.
Her: That doesn't mean they revived it. That just means they have got a load of people who don't actually like Rock n Roll to listen to it, alienating those who do like it.
Me: That isn't their fault, though. The more people who listen the better!
Her: That doesn't make it better.
Me: So you're telling me that you would rather have a small bunch of people who appreciate the music, but are still a minority nonetheless, turn up to your gig than Chili's concert sized proportions of people?

Which leads me to my question... would you rather be in a band that has millions turning up to their concert, but most of those people aren't true fans they just like your most popular single or something, or would you rather be in a band that plays in small venues but to a crowd of people where everyone truly appreciates your music.

The latter.

Why?... Because i'm a idiot.

Latter, its more fun, you'll probably have to keep your dayjob but you can reach more people in a small venue than in a giant field, theres more passion and intimicy.

adidasss 07-02-2006 04:16 AM

razorlight is great fun....dump your girlfriend....:D

Piss Me Off 07-02-2006 04:17 AM

Your girlfriends right, cherish her forever. :D

TrampInaTux 07-02-2006 04:18 AM

I think they are pretty generic to be honest, but I do enjoy some of their music. In The Morning is a good song though :)

And I would rather have the first choice, cos when you've got thousands of people watching you perform I doubt that you would be thinking 'well this is great and all, but do they appreciate my music?'

boo boo 07-02-2006 04:19 AM

Hey Hobo, if you do dump her, could you give her my phone number?

I'll PM it to you.

Nah, but seriously would you really want to be in a relationship with someone with the same EXACT taste as yours.... That would get boring as hell.

TrampInaTux 07-02-2006 04:23 AM

I'm not complaining! We have some good music debates, which she always wins cos she's got a great taste in music really. She's putting me onto a lot of old stuff/obscure stuff that I would never have listened to before.

And her number? SHE'S 15 YOU PSYCHO!

Merkaba 07-02-2006 04:29 AM

They both have their perks.

But what really matters is how many lovely ladies come to the after party;)

YES!!! Most definitely. I like my taste in music big time, beats the taste of girls i've been with. Listening to KT Tunstall while making out, yeeesh.

I agree with these two. ^

Not because your idiot though boo boo. ;)

TrampInaTux 07-02-2006 04:41 AM

Why dump my girlfriend if she's agreeing with all of you? You people just want to cause friction, don't you? :)

hiu 07-02-2006 05:09 AM

I would prefer to be Dinosaur Jr and pay horrendious prices for tickets while playing in small venues to indie people who go there to look hip and buy out all the tickets before the fucking people who actually like the band get to see them. I would also play Deep Wound songs to piss all these people off.

lolz

I'd rather play to my fans in a small club.

Urban Hat€monger ? 07-02-2006 10:38 AM

F*ck integrity I want the cash

Reznorslave 07-02-2006 10:39 AM

I would rather be adored by millions than hundreds! Plus like Urban said, there's always the cash aspect!!!

Keep the girlfriend.

And I think it would be better for a band to play at smaller venues in front of an audience that geuninely likes them. Rather than play at the bigger venues in front of an audience they may have one or two favorite songs by you.
It makes the job more worthwhile.

PS: if your girlfriend is hot then definitely keep her. But if she's hot and you're not big on looks, then . . . still keep her. But only if she makes you happy. :)

Sound Devastation 07-02-2006 12:12 PM

i dont care how many people would turn up to my gig tbh.

and having the exact taste as your partner is great.. means you can share a record collection and go to gigs together and get each other into new stuff. :D

swim 07-02-2006 01:09 PM

I like small venues. BUT if you have to fork out 300 plus dollars just to get a damn a ticket go ahead and play in a damn stadium so I can get my 30 dollar back row seat.

TrampInaTux 07-02-2006 02:21 PM

I didn't want this to turn into relationship advice thankyou very much. She's hot AND makes good conversations. Not often you see that in a girl.

And if she agreed with me all the time then I may aswell be going out with myself. And what's the fun in that?

Expletive Deleted, I know you have a hatred for the Arctic Monkeys but don't deny that loads of people got back into British Rock etc. after Arctic Monkeys released their debut album and it flew off the shelves. Before that album was released everyone was bumming off rap, since then the tides have changed. You may not like them but don't deny fact.

Sound Devastation 07-02-2006 03:26 PM

its all very well getting people to listen to 'rock'.. but most (not all, but most..) of them will go no further into the genre. i have a friend who was into rap but got really into the Arctic Monkeys and co, and although she now likes the more 'rocky/indie' bands that gets into the charts she has no interest in the rock or indie genres at all... she was a pop fan and will remain a pop fan.

there are obviously a few who take the next step.. but those few are going to do that whether or not they like the band at No.1.

TrampInaTux 07-03-2006 12:27 AM

I know loads of people who got into Rock after the Arctic Monkeys album was released, maybe not because of how good the music was but because it had overtaken Rap as the cool thing to listen to.

Alo 07-03-2006 12:46 AM

Small public band. I have met people from bands who tour the world, and play gigs where only 40 people show up. They love it. And a big crowd would intimidate me, personally.
