People who listen to music in your life.

Since joining this forum, my music taste has improved 10 fold, though when i am around friends, and hear them listening to Atrocious ****, i tell them. They get offended and say their music is the best and i am wrong, now when someone is say, wanting to put on a slipknot album, in you're car, and yous ay no thats garbage, and they get all offended, shouldn't they a, not have the right to change you're music, and such, and they should listen to you're musical advice right?
so how many people run into this problem?

dirt mcgirt 11-29-2006 09:07 PM

ayo, maybe you should change the title to 'people who listen to music in your car'

DontRunMeOver 11-30-2006 07:03 AM

I play folk music loudly in my car and it turns out everybody likes folk music, so they never try to change the CD.

MURDER JUNKIE 11-30-2006 07:33 AM

The general rule is "your car, your music"

so if someone else is driving, you have to suck it up and keep your mouth shut

DontRunMeOver 11-30-2006 08:11 AM

It depends on why you're driving somebody too. If they'd begged you for a lift somewhere and you're doing them a favour, then there's no way they can put on a CD unless they have your very specific permission to do so. If you offered somebody a lift unrequested or either of you could have driven and you (yourself) decided you would be the driver, then it changes in some ways... because then it was you who suggested they be in your car.

Sound Devastation 11-30-2006 08:19 AM

Throughout school and sixth form i had the same problem.. only one of my friends had heard of ANY of the bands i liked at the time. The others.. just stopped asking me for lifts!

My mum didn't like me having my music on... until i compiled a few CDs of 'soft and pretty' stuff from my collection, and my sister couldn't drive so it was always my music somehow :D

Uni is different though.. despite not having a car, all my uni friends are really open minded and into music. I can play stuff to friends that they'll love or i can raid their CD collections to find awesome stuff i havent heard before. Im taking them in the car to Holland in April though so we'll see about car music rules then!

Yeah, my girlfriend will always try to throw in her electronic garbage like Freezepop and Elektrokute and all that stuff but then I tell her it sucks and I put on some Converge just to piss her off. My friend does the same thing, he thinks Ben Folds is God, I don't, and he always has to ride with me and he always trys to play it so i'll just take it out and put in some Get Up Kids just to piss him off.

If it is either, your house or your car, then you are the one who controls the music being played.

Alo 11-30-2006 08:44 AM

People ususally like the music I turn on. But that's in my room, not my car, I do not own a car.

I tend to turn the music off in other people's cars though!

holdyoualways 11-30-2006 10:42 AM

well im kind of a bitch to my friends when it comes to music
ill listen to anything i want in their presence & skip any song that i dont want to listen to, whether they like it or not
& if theyre listening to music ill tell them to turn the crap music off
to each her own i guess
i just cant stand listening to music i dont like

MURDER JUNKIE 11-30-2006 11:14 AM

If anyone touches the music in my car I will do one of two things:

1) Tell them to get the f*ck out
2) Put on GG Allin or Necro

Both of these things generally make them shut the f*ck up

Melkor 12-01-2006 01:54 AM

I hate Nu-Metal, Pop and Rap, so I am always vocal about it. My friends don't take offense, but they also don't take my advice either.

riseagainstrocks 12-01-2006 03:07 PM

Most of my friends don't like what I do. So we usually compromise.

~nutshell~ 12-01-2006 06:27 PM

well I say if you're in your car then you have the right to veto friends' music that you don't want to listen to while driving.. It's like your right as the driver.

My husband listens to tons of death meatal in the car and most of it I'm not into...AT ALL. But I put up with it cuz he's driving :)

Raine 12-03-2006 06:20 PM

You're not supposed to touch the music in my car if I'm in it.
failure to comply will result in a few things if not at least one

1) get out
2) all appendages will be removed
3) i'll turn the music up louder just to piss you off.

Wontcareok 12-03-2006 11:20 PM

That rule applies to the car and living room or for your home theater system. If anyone tries to mess with it, tsk tsk.

Most of my friends have pretty good taste in music. Generally, if they're driving with me I'll try to avoid Merzbow or The Boredoms and play something I think they will enjoy at least a bit. But if they turn down my music or try to change it I'll kick 'em out of the damn car.

hiu 12-05-2006 02:33 PM

I play Wesley Willis and everyone's happy.

White Lies 12-06-2006 05:28 AM

I've this one friend who's into Black Metal/Doom Metal, "Dark Ambient", Drone, Post Rock, Industrial, "Harsh Noise" and all that stuff, although his favorite artist is Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. I might get into some of that stuff eventually.

A group of friends are into punk, NOFX, Offspring, Propagandhi, Misfits, Bad Religion, Rise Against, Against Me and all that, which I can relate to because I used to be way into it as well. And the rest like Led Zeppelin, RHCP, Muse, etc.

To sum up, my friends have decent taste, but not great.

dojo 12-06-2006 08:38 AM

For me it's all simple: my car or my house - my music. Something like my way or the highway :D

Mr Sensitive 12-06-2006 09:09 AM

There is a logical solution to this problem.

Get rid of your friends.

cardboard adolescent 12-06-2006 02:48 PM

One of my friends likes a lot of ska, which is fine, another likes a lot of what I introduced him to, Joy Division, Dinosaur Jr, and he also likes a lot of Smashing Pumpkins. Then another is into grunge and noise rock, which is pretty sweet, he's usually listening to Scratch Acid or Jesus Lizard or Big Black or something in that vein.

And then there's my brother who has extremely similar taste to me except that he his is a bit looser, especially when it comes to indie.

Merkaba 12-06-2006 08:45 PM

I have a mate who really likes his hiphop, well he says he does but doesn't really delve too deeply into it. His girlfriend likes stuff like High School Musical and other pop stuff. Another mate likes his grunge and general rock, Nirvana, Floyd, Smashing Pumpkins, Wolfmother. Another mate likes alsorts from Michael Jackson to Metallica to Crazy Frog...(yeah he stumps me on that one too).

None of my friends really know or care to much for my stuff, but I always get a "woah, who the fuck is this?" out of them:)

Spike*Spiegel 12-06-2006 09:01 PM

i usually let them pick the cd. this works out pretty well since i like all the cds i own.

Desired_Moments 12-07-2006 07:52 AM

I just tell them, well you like them I don't. I wouldn't listen to something I didn't like in my car just because someone else wanted to.

Exactly. But recently my cousin bought "Now 23" *shudder* and borrowed my car when she came to pick me up and take me home..it was loud and the windows were down and there were people outside...I got embarassed..and asked her to turn it down..she said "why cause its not goth sh*it?"

WTF does that mean?
