If you're ever in town hmu and we'll go to Northern Spirits. Also, some Nathan Hubbard I mentioned earlier: Vinny Golia is a badass here, but I don't think he's local. |
Your Local Scene
Wassup, guys.
I only just set up here, so be gentle, but I was wondering about a few things. I'm from Ireland, place called Cork, and the scene here is the most laughably depressing thing imaginable, and it really bums me out ( so much I made a blog to try fix it ) So I really need to know about other places. Is America as good as it's hyped? Or anything. I just need to know. It's so dead here, restore my faith (or share my pain). :( |
America is America a BIG ASS Country
u could prob stick like 5 Irelands in the State of texas Alone / thread |

Holy land here... Weird mix of Electronic/ Dub music infused with Rock.
Just search "Tatran " And you'll get my point. A little bit of Jazz, A little bit of Reggae, nothing too impressive.. No one is really authentic on stage which bums me out |

The music scene in Chicago is one of the best in the world. *shrug* What the fuck else can I say other than stay away, it's also the murder capitol of... well shit, I don't know... the midwest?
...and yes we have big asses. and tornado's. |
I live in Seattle. Definitely a great music scene here.

Each individual american city scene is probably as big as the whole Irish scene. Only act I can think of worth mention are some dudes called crojayn. They're on bandcamp, I think. Yeah, I mean there's an actual graduation to being a signed artist in America, nothing here.

Good bands from your scene? Small bands, that is. And what's considered small???

Ireland has Shelley Brien
She is very talented, and love her duets with long time boyfriend Mark Lanegan. Here she is in this video with him performing Wedding Dress, but I know she has done a lot on her own as well. Our local scene in small town Kansas, USA is not bad actually. Love these guys, The Ben Miller Band. Rapidly gaining popularity and for good reason. They are fresh, energetic, talented, genuine guys. I met my husband at one of their concerts before they started getting famous and touring Europe. They open at concerts for ZZ Top last I heard. But give them a look- |

^one of the most important "musicians" of the 20th and 21st centuries....from Ireland :) |
Saw this guy at a local show, he kicked some ass. There's some bull**** in the beginning but it'll get going eventually (around 4:00). Cool guy as well. We also have a thriving jazz scene here. These two, Joshua White, Mark Dresser, and Dave Scott are some pretty solid ones. A professor here recently told me about Jeff Kaiser, who produces in Ventura near my school. His stuff that I have on cd is a lot cooler than this, but I still like this one quite a bit. Quote:

I feel like I'm pretty bad at keeping up with recent local Philadelphia bands, but this city and the surrounding area has put out some really good music over the years. Some that come to mind:
Nothing—Indie/shoegaze type stuff. Lonesummer—Noisy, blackgaze stuff. Man Man—Junkyard music a la Captain Beefheart and Tom Waits. Cleric—Doomy, synth-driven post-metal. The YMD—Bratty hip hop that sounds like the Beastie Boys sampling 90s indie and hardcore in a basement. The Dead Milkmen—Bratty, jokey 80s punk. Ween—Bratty mishmash of classic rock and pop. The Shape of Broad Minds—Hip hop that sits somewhere between Madvillain and free jazz. Sister Sledge—Disco legends, come on. Bardo Pond—Shoegaze. West Philadelphia Orchestra—Balkan brass dance music. The Roots—Hip hop with a live band meets everything. Rosetta—Doomy, sludgy post-metal. Kurt Vile—Indie singer/songwriter stuff. Need New Body—Experimental junkyard music. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah—Neo postpunk/indie rock band. We kind of share these guys with Brooklyn. |
I had forgotten that the best band in the post-hardcore world is from San Diego until they were mentioned in another thread.
Another addition is Cattle Decapitation and anything else Gabe Serbian has been associated with. I think my favourite is his work on Zu's Carboniferous. Jammed with him once at a jazz workshop and it was righteous, easily the best drummer I've ever played with. We also have Justin Pearson, who ****ing rules. |

I only heard him on the new Zu recordings and with The Locust. (Tried Cattle Decapitation, but didn't really care for it.) Any other bands of his I should check out? |
I like Head Wound City a lot.
Are you sure that he didn't tour with them? I found out about Serbian through Zu, and that was years before Cortar Todo was released. |

Never heard of Head Wound City, will check them out. |
Indy has fostered a pretty awesome, albeit small, hip hop community that's been making strides lately. Check out Sirius Blvck if you're remotely interested.

how local we talkin here cus within a 1 mile radius we have like 4 bars of **** LOL
|
You only have four ****ty measures in your area? Must be a thriving grindcore scene going on.
|
I want to actually turn my downtown into a hub of local music. Because where I come from they have a day dedicated to music downtown each month and it's really great walking down the street with city slickers playing their obscure shit. But I don't know where to start.

Big Punk and Indie scene from where I'm at. There's a few rather revered Stoner Metal bands on the nearby coast too.

Antioch Arrow... Heroin... The Locust... you guys are quite lucky when it comes to punk bands. The Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower had a legendary performance there as well. |
Local bands in your area
Being a virtual shut-in, I haven't managed to get to any gigs in the last ten years or so, so I can't help. But thought it might be interesting for you all to clue us in on the local bands in your area whom you think need listening to. Maybe a free plug for them. Vids if you have them, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, whatever.

Living in Chicago (south side), I have access to dozens of live concerts every single night, but I only get out every once in a while to catch a show, and it's usually because I know somebody in the band, or a friend of a friend kind of thing. Here are some of those that come to mind...
My homies: Here's their Reverbnation page: Convoy! https://www.reverbnation.com/convoy/songs# __________________________________________________ ___________________________________ Another one from around here, and features Tina Marie (who was the vocalist on the last tune of my Cheap Guitars album, as well as the singer in my old band): Stillwater Still Water Band - Band in Chicago IL - BandMix.com __________________________________________________ ___________________________________ I've seen these guys live a few times, and I'm always blown away by their live performances: McCarthy Road https://www.reverbnation.com/mccarthyroad __________________________________________________ ___________________________________ My good friend (who I always happen to run into at concerts) is the bass player in this band. Glenn used to be in the same band as Tina and me. Sausagebrain https://www.reverbnation.com/sausagebrain __________________________________________________ ___________________________________ Another friend of a friend kind of situation. The bass player from this band used to date my x-GF's niece. I'd been to his house a few times to jam. Funny thing, the house he used to live in was damaged by fire, and I was asked to help in the restoration. Long story. Here's their stuff: All The Animals https://alltheanimals.bandcamp.com/album/warning-teeth __________________________________________________ ___________________________________ Also, not from my area but a really good band from the pacific northwest, and a friend on-line: Lust for Glory https://lustforglory.bandcamp.com/album/blue-idle ...and here's a side project from Sean (of LFG): |
A not entirely local supergroup founded in SD (can't ****ing wait for the debut).

Nice! At first I was like: Why in ****s name is Gabe not on the drums? Then I saw Lombardo's in the line-up. Everything makes sense now. |
God it sucks living in Hampton Roads, Virginia. There are bands here, but... blegh. Only local bands I ever saw were ****ty metalcore/deathcore bands without an original bone in their body.
|
There's a cool ass band in my area called cloudcover that may or may not have an album coming out sometime in the first half of this year
