Default Classic albums any true music fan should own or at least listen to

I've given myself a task to listen to all the classic albums I hear people making references to when discussing other bands. The first on the list was Radiohead's - OK Computer (never before have I actually sat down and listened to it in its entirety)...and already I've discovered a gem of a song kept hidden from me for all these years, Let Down which might possible be their most beautiful song. Great stuff this album. I became very intrigued after reading a very impressive eulogy written about it in Uncut magazine (mental note, buy music magazines more often. Yes I've finally found out that most are available in Croatia, well at least the British ones and that's all that really matters innit?)

Now, set up a list for me, the title speaks for itself. A brief description or at least a genre specification would be nice, along with the year of the publication.
A chronological list would also be very much appreciated.
