Simple question on CDs and legal music

Hi Friends,
I am here to ask a small question, hope you guys would help. I have a forum based website(free),with a music player embedded, and i want to upload songs to the server so that the users can listen to.

I researched on net,and came to know, that i can only upload C.C licensed music, not anything else,as its not free.I tried to download some C.C licensed music, but it does not contains the main stream tracks and albums, because its free.

Now my question is, I have bought lots of CDs,can i upload songs from those CDs to the server.Would those songs be considered as LEGAL,because i paid for them??

Your help and input would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

since you purchased the CD, you legally own it however it might get sticky because by posting it online it could be deemed "distributing" it especially due to programs like tunebite which allow the recording of music via a sound card or something. it might be worthwhile to look around at some other forums and see if any others are using mainstream music.

posting tracks from albums you have bought, online, is breaching copyright as it is a form of broadcast. The only way you can do it is if you have permission from the copyright owner.

the copyright owner will usually be the label, unless the band are on a small label, in which case it'll be the band.
