Music Censorship

In my english class, i am having to lead the class in a debate on a topic. I have decided to do Music Censorship. The blinking out, editing of music in order to hide the lyrics. I've always felt that song is a form of speech, and doesn't the US's Constitution allow freedom of speech? By the way, this is based in America, not all over the world.

So, pretty much I was just wonddering what some of your thoughts were on the matter?

tdoc210 03-06-2007 08:13 PM

is never appropriate, unless its editing aiden

Sparky 03-06-2007 08:27 PM

i don't think it should be taking into effect really, its no different from any other from of art. If its overly suggestive, or inappropriate the artist is going to have to deal with the consequences himself, and as long as they make sure to advertise it correctly, so you don't have a bunch of pissed of Mormons doing a giant bonfire with your matireal.

tdoc210 03-06-2007 08:36 PM

fuck censorship

ZeppelinAir 03-06-2007 09:03 PM

the censor ship of music is a stupid thing, but its also a bit of a blessing. when kids see the sticker on the cd that still contains all lyrics they want it more, if they get stuck with the censored cd they will eventualy buy the real thing later on thus selling more albums for the band

censorship of anything is stupid. if you don't want your kids to see or hear something, then be a good parent and tell them they can't watch it or listen to it. ::shrug::

Radio censorship I can understand, extremely public. Plus those who really appreciate good music don't really listen to the radio anyhow, so it shouldn't be a problem to the audiophiles out there.

A guy once told me they were thinking of banning all music. I believed him. I'm too gullible sometimes.

TheUsedToolguy 03-07-2007 04:52 PM

I don't know about that KL, I admit there is better stuff than what's played on the radio, but I don't have a CD player in my car, so I always listen to the radio while driving, it's better than nothing.

Kevorkian Logic 03-07-2007 05:32 PM

do you have a tape player? or better yet, an A-track player?

swim 03-07-2007 05:34 PM

A portable cd player adapter for your car cassette player is a good 10-20$ investment.

tdoc210 03-07-2007 05:51 PM

Agreed, especially seeing as how pointlessly profain most of it is.

mixed meters 08-24-2007 05:57 PM

People's veiw on offensive stuff is silly. If you banned swear words then you would have to ban the word seal in french (phoque) because it sounds liek the f word.

sleepy jack 08-24-2007 06:29 PM

Yeah well America is primarily an english speaking nation so...

Seltzer 08-24-2007 11:35 PM

I very strongly disagree with censorship.

Perhaps you could compare the restriction of lyrics in music to the restriction of certain musical intervals in the past? The Church forbade the use of certain intervals (3rds and 6ths) until composers gradually began to include them (mainly due to John Dunstaple). Of course folk musicians were exempt from such restrictions.

But restricting lyrics is a good analogy to restricting musical intervals. We did away with one, so it only makes sense to do away with the other.
