what are your favorite artists and why?

FAVORITE MUSICIANS:

Kurt Cobain- leader of the grunge movement, great guitarist, great vocalist
Layne Staley- great singer
Bradley Nowell- GREAT singer, artist in general,"If I was a roach on a tree, tell me, would you smoke me?"
Dimebag Darrell- one of the greatest metal guitarist EVER
Sid Vicious- picked up punk and turned it into wat it is today
Jimi Hendrix- No. 1 guitarist ever
Flea- one of the best bassists in history
2Pac- great lyrics, great songs
Eric Wilson- funny guy, great bassist
Johnny cash- The Man In Black, biggest influence in music

i don't agree with you about a lot of things there, especially about Sid Vicious.

anyway.

Mike Watt - he's an amazing bassist, and from interviews seems like a really smart, all-round great guy. His love for D Boon always shines thru as well, and you can tell there was an incredible bond between those two guys which to me helps make the Minutemen much more than your average band. He's my favorte musician.

Thurston Moore - easily my favorite guitarist. I admire where he came from musically and his stories from over the years, and how he gives smaller and some pretty far out bands a lot of time and recognition. He's always been a very innovative guitarist, he's also got countless side-projects, and lots of other stuff going on as well, like his lable ecstatic peace. And he owns about a million vinyls.

Steve Albini - he's been in Big Black, Shellac and Rapeman. That's 3 pretty awesome bands. But he's also one of the best producers in alternative music, in my opinion. The Jesus Lizard, The Ex, Pixies, Slint, Low, Mclusky and lots of other great bands have all benefited from his work. He looks like a total dork, but he's done well for himself.

Sid Vicious? I thought this was a favorite musicians thing...

Conor Oberst - One of the most fantastic lyricists ever, and I love listening to all his stuff except Cassadaga which i'm warming towards.
Elliott Smith - Really talented and is my favorite vocalist ever, and basically always able to comfort me.
Blake Sennett - Sexy vocalist and makes me happy.
Patrick Wolf - Really talented, and like I don't know I just love his music.
Mike Kinsella - All his projects are wonderful, and Owen is like the shit.
Jeff Mangum - I love how expressive his voice is, and Aeroplane is perfect.
Nick Drake - Influenced alot of artists I like and really enjoyable.

Sid Vicious actually was very important to punk rock, but only in the image department.

I love The Sex Pistols, but Frank Zappa said it best. "The story of punk, a guy in England, and it always has to do with some guy in england, a guy in England who had a boutique was smart enough to know that no musical trend has ever survived unless you could dress up to it. All the important musical trends were accompanied by clothing trends to go along with the music, so he was going to cut right through to the heart of the matter and forget about the music and start with the clothes, so he got some guys and he stuck some safety pins in their face and put some funny clothes on them and said here take these instruments, you are now The Sex Pistols."

But its still stupid to criticize a band because image played a big part in their popularity. Image has always been a important part in marketing music and it still is.

But it has nothing to do with the music itself, sorry Urban.

Anywho. The musicians who inspire me the most.

Robert Fripp - One of the most original guitarists around, leader of the worlds greatest prog band, dueted with Eno on classic albums like Another Green World and Here Come the Warm Jets, played on Bowie's Heroes and Van Der Graaf Genators Pawn Hearts, easly one of the best back catelogs of any musician.
Frank Zappa - Brilliant guitarist, songwriter, composer, producer, filmmaker, satirist, effective anti-censorship activist. A f*cking polymath.
Miles Davis - I prefer his cool period over his fusion stuff, just by a tad.
Brian Eno - Played on Roxy Musics first two (and best) albums, played on Bowies classic Low and produced two of my all time favorite albums, Talking Heads Remain In Light and U2s Joshua Tree. His solo stuff aint bad either.
Tony Levin - Fun fact, he has played bass on every song ever made since 1971, every single one.
Adrian Belew - Another hard working session man who dosen't get enough props.
Jimi Hendrix - Errr... Sorry, I've got nothing.
Rick Wakeman - Innovator of the rock opera ice show. =)
Bjork - I'm still waiting for Volta to come out. With great impatience.
David Bowie - The Rock N Roll chameleon.
Todd Rundgren - The self proclaimed whitest musician of all time.
Ian Anderson - Nothing says Rock N Roll more than extended Flute solos and lyrics about Jesus.
DJ Shadow - Anyone who samples artists as diverse as A Tribe Called Quest and Foreigner and pulls it off deserves a tip of the hat.
Tom Waits - I can immitate his voice, but not without having to take a cough drop afterwards.
Billy Corgan - However I still wont accept Zeitgeist as being a true Pumpkins album if James Iha isn't involved.
Everyone in The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and The Who - &^*&^&*^879678968796^&*()
Steve Howe - Yes
Chris Squire - Yes
Bill Bruford - Yes and King Crimson
Jonny Greenworld - The only guy in history to have suffered from repetitive strain injury and not be a total loser.
Flea - The guy that inspired me to take up bass, some day I hope to be as good as him, but for now I will have to settle being almost as good as Sid Vicious.
Bootsy Collins - Inspired Flea to inspire me to take up bass.
Kurt Cobain - Oh wait, he sux, l0lzzzerz. Hez cant pley geetar, listen to some Petrucci d000ds.

sid vicious is very important to punk rock, if you look at many important musicians in the past 20 years or so, many will say that Sid ad the Sex Pistols are very important to punk and music in general.

But I defenitley agree with you on Mike Watt. Damn, what an amazing artist he is. I like Thurston Moore's story he told in Nirvana's Box Set booklet.

Sid Vicious may have been the posterchild for punk rock, but he did nothing to improve the world of music as it is today.

Anyway....

Eric Johnson - Amazing guitar player. Arguably one of the best guitar players in the world today. His style of playing is flawless and he writes some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard.

Geoff Rickly - Amazing lyricist. While I'll admit his voice isn't the most powerful by any means, he embraces that and his style of singing couples itself perfectly with his writing.

Ben Harper - He incorporates reggae, funk, soul, and even a little folk into his sound and does a great job. He's not a revolutionary guitar player, but an amazing singer and his voice brings a lot of power to his music. Great lyricist as well.

John Popper - All I can say is wow. He's just pouring with talent. Amazing singer, amazing writer, and most of all, INSANE harmonica player. Blues Traveler as a band is great. I've been a fan since I was probably 7 or 8.

Dimebag Darrel - Hands down one of the most influential guitar players ever. That's all.

Joe Satriani - His funk/fusion/neoclassical style....or whatever you call it...is just fun to listen to. Watching him play is so fun because he seems to do it so effortlessly. Great guitar player, great musician.

Bradley Nowell - I've been listening to Sublime a ton lately. It's a shame he died. The incorporation of funk, ska, punk, and even hip hop into his music is great. He is easily one of the most influential musicians of the '90's. (and part of the '80's)
