"Would you sell out"? Your thoughts...

What do you consider to be a "sell out"? In reading a few postings, I wondered what the overall consensus for the meaning of the term is here. If you make money from your music from tv, or ads, what's the big deal, if you are making some bucks from doing what you love? Isn't that considered different from being offered a record deal if you change "this" or change "that about you or your music? Would like to hear your thoughts on this...

I dont believe selling out is when a band gets on mtz like most, i think it is when bands like modest mouse bitch and preach about being indie, then shoot themselves in the foot by signing with epic records and producing music that fits their very own defintition of "selling out"

I think its basically when they change their whole image/style just to sell records. I can understand trying something new...as long as you somewhat keep your roots, but some just completely change everything =/ Those are the sell outs.

I totally agree with the above post, its when the music changes to suit what that masses like. Its also when the band changes. Ive seen so many bands for £5, hit the charts and a year later its £20 to see them - and in a much bigger venue!! So many people can't afford to pay that to see a gig, and to me, that's selling out.

I think sometimes people confuse selling out instead of maturing.

For example I used to think the Manic Street Preachers were ok , now I think they come out with middle of the road dross.

Just because they are more popular now I don`t think they sold out , I just think they`ve turned old & boring

^ yeah, exactly
it is also when a band releases a song that's not that good but it becomes more popular through the non-rock crowd while losing its old fans

blackTshirt 01-03-2005 02:37 AM

by the way, when that happens, the old fans feel kinda ashamed, like they are the sell outs, not that band...this sucks...it sucks to be disappointed by your favorite artist

I don't think I have ever referred to a band as "selling out". Sometimes people grow up, people change their tastes, and often they simply want more money and exposure (can yeh really blame em?). I don't think we can judge a musician just purely on who's listening to the music (even if we are tempted to do so).
