Default Cool Article on what computer setup some big house DJ's use

A very interesting article appeared in the last number of the magazine Dj times.
DJs The World Over Weigh In With Their Mobile-Studio Details refer to the technology utilized by various djs and producers in the realization of music
Published in the April 2007 issue of DJ Times Magazine

They ask the professionals four simple questions:

1) What’s your main computer model?
2) What’s your principal sequencing/recording software?
3) What’s your favorite studio tool—interface, plug-in, virtual synth, sample library, etc.—and why?

4) Why does this system suit your particular needs?

We were fortunate to get responses from DJ/producers of all stripes—from international superstars to mobiles and touring hip-hop jocks—showing just how quickly and easily one can create music these days. Enjoy.

Troy Pierce, M_nus, Berlin, Germany
Computer: Sony Vaio.
Software: Ableton Live.
Fave Studio Tool: My new Martion Audiosystems monitors—unbelievable.
Why This System? I travel a lot, so having a setup that lets me work on planes/hotels is really helpful. It’s totally a cliché, but so many times I have had a delayed flight, worked on ideas and taken them back to the studio and came up with decent results.

Dubfire, Deep Dish, D.C.
Computer: Mackbook Pro 15.
Software: Logic Pro 7 & Ableton Live, which we mixed my latest Global Underground CD on.
Fave Studio Tool: Empirical Labs FATSO—it can make anything digital sound analog.
Why This System? Less is more.

Ivano Bellini, SFP Records, Miami/NYC
Computer: Mac Titanium Power Book, Mac iBook, Dell Inspiron.
Software: Ableton Live, Reason, Adobe Audition
Fave Studio Tool: Adobe Audition's Multimaximizer.
Why This System? With the laptops, everything as at my fingertips.

James Zabiela, One+One, Southampton, UK
Computer: Apple Macbook.
Software: Ableton Live—incredibly intuitive.
Fave Studio Tool: MDSP's LiveCut VST—super-glitchoid madness.
Why This System? I have all I need in very few boxes.

Johnny Vicious, Vish Music, NYC
Computer: Mac G4
Software: Digidesign Pro Tools & Apple Logic
Fave Studio Tool: For sounds, I love the GForce MiniMonsta virtual vintage MiniMoog and all the Logic synths.
Why This System? I use Pro Tools to edit and make my own drums and loops. I can do anything I want.

Lee Coombs, Thrust, London, UK
Computer: Sony Vaio VGN-T270p
Software: Cubase SX3
Fave Studio Tool: Reason 3
Why This System? Speed.

SANDY RIVERA, KINGS OF TOMORROW, LONDON
Computer: MacBook Pro 17
Software: Logic 7, Albeton Live & Pro Tools with Mbox
Fave Studio Tool: Logic’s ES1 & EVP88 synths, plus Oxygen8 keyboard.
Why This System? I can travel light & finish a track with it.

Marcos Carnaval, UC Music Group, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Computer: MacBook
Software: Pro Tools
Fave Studio Tools: Digidesign’s MBox 2—it’s portable with everything you need in one package. Why This System? It’s simple & efficient.

Nic Fanciulli, Ministry of Sound, Kent, UK
Computer: Apple Mac G5
Software: Apple Logic 7
Fave Studio Tool: Roland TR808.
Why This System? The 808 still gives the best drum sounds.

Josh Harris, Seiren Productions, NYC
Computer: Macbook 2 gHz Intel Dual Core, 1 GB RAM, Mac OS 10.4.8 with an M-Audio Firewire 410 audio interface
Software: Logic Pro & Pro Tools are my sequencers. Logic has a great feel—been using it for 10 years—and it’s loaded with soft synths and loops, so you can get tracks up and running quickly. When I’m in my studio, I use Pro Tools, so I like to have an M-Powered version of it for my mobile rig.
Fave Studio Tool: Ableton Live 6. I use it for almost all my loop processing and I do my mix shows in it.
Why This System? I can carry a complete mix on my laptop. To be able to sit in a coffee shop and work on a remix is very liberating.

Luke Fair, Bedrock, Toronto
Computer: Mac G4 Titanium
Software: Ableton Live
Fave Studio Tool: Everything in Ableton.
Why This System? I can custom edit tracks before shows.

Cristian Paduraru, Christian Records, Bucharest, Romania
Computer: Toshiba Satellite
Software: Sony ACID
Fave Studio Tools: Audio Editor because it makes the sound visible.
Why This System? Very efficient to create with.

Sin Morera, Sin/Mimi Music, Passaic, N.J.
Computer: Duo-Core Macbook Pro
Software: Pro Tools, Logic, Reason
Fave Studio Tool? Reaktor, because you can design anything you want from the ground up.
Why This System? It covers everything—from sound design to tracking to mixing.

Lance Jordan, Dusk Recordings, NYC
Computer: MacBook Pro
Software: Steinberg Cubase 4, Propellerhead Reason 3, Ableton Live 5
Fave Studio Tool: Korg MicroKontrol USB keyboard controller—small keys & pads. Also, Steinberg’s HALion One virtual sampler.
Why This System? Fast, powerful, portable.

Chris “The Greek” Panaghi, DJG Productions, L.I., N.Y.
Computer: Sony Vaio
Software: Steinberg Cubase SX
Fave Studio Tool: UAD-1 powered plug-ins & T.C. Electronic PowerCore plug-ins
Why This System? Ease & flexibility.

Victor Calderone, Waveform, NYC
Computer: Apple G4 PowerBook
Software: Logic Pro
Fave Studio Tools: Logic. The options are endless—plug-ins, synths, effects.
Why This System? Versatility—I can edit, mix and produce while I’m on the road.

Junior Vasquez (aka Ellis D), Junior Vasquez Music, NYC
Computer: Mac PowerBook, loaded.
Software: Logic & Pro Tools
Fave Studio Tool: My own turntables connected to Pro Tools—and my trusty programmers!
Why This System? Because I build my mixes live from distorted samples and then lay the track.

Tom Stephan, Superchumbo, London, UK
Computer: Macbook Pro
Software: Logic Pro, also use Ableton & Pro Tools
Fave Studio Tools: All the Native Instruments stuff—they’re dirty and filthy!
Why This System? I’ve got my Macbook partitioned into two bootable drives—one for business/email and another for music. On the road, I can keep in touch, download promos and buy music—or I can throw together a new edit or mash-up in Ableton or Pro Tools.
Apparently the generalized tendency in the music production is the use of MAC computers and to the utilization of Logic, Albeton Live & Pro Tools.

Peace
