It doesn't bother me if you don't support that which doesn't tickle your fancy (I really don't think anybody does), but it's no reason to disparage the artist/band by deeming them 'overrated'. Not supporting is not the same as ruining support. I don't necessarily support Band X, but I also wouldn't go out of my way to ruin their reputation. Doing such a thing just makes it seems as though 'overrated' and 'personal opinion' are the same thing, when they clearly aren't.
but isn't a concept of a rating completely subjective, anyway?

my own basis of overrated is not that there is hardly any artistic merit even if over-popular, e.g. most of the Top 40 stuff which are pretty basic but most people love, but that people seem to subjectively put them too highly on the pedestal on a general consensus, i.e. the Beatles

sure the Beatles wrote some great tunes and created some great music but as John Winston Lennon (RIP) said when they broke up, "get over it, we're just a rock band, if you want nostalgia, you can always listen to the old records we made"

Ease up, guys. If Starry Night thinks everything praised by pitchfork is overrated, it's fine. Doesn't indicate she isn't analyzing these things from experience listening to them. S/he could, or couldn't have. Doesn't matter either way, hurts the spirit of the thread though if you point the finger and say "I see this all the time, and it's people who refuse to judge things on their musical merit." it kind of hurts the relief in being able to publicly announce that you think something is overrated.
That comment is so overrated.

Sorry... being facetious.

I don't think it's about ruining reputations, would you be talking the same way if I disliked some artists you really didn't like? I actually doubt the artists I say I don't like care about that at all. As for objectivity, well I suppose people could argue everything is subjective and nobody's opinion is of any consequence in which case why bother talking on this message board at all? I would say that i don't take music personally, if someone says the music I like is crap then whatever, I'm not about to be worried by that. Others take music far more personally and too much so in my opinion.

But I don't think that lol, that was just some inference that someone made.

Hence why attaching the words 'overrated' and 'underrated' to music is utterly worthless as it takes them outside of their traditional definitions. Might as well call this "Which popular bands do you not like?". You'd get the exact same answer, except with the accurate terminology. Somewhere along the line, people have become so involved with what they like/don't like that they've forgotten certain words don't apply to the scenario anymore. Plenty of words are just used for shock value around here nowadays.

If everything was accepted, there would be no discussion and this would thread would have ultimately less purpose than it does now.

Ease up, guy. If people wish to understand where a person is coming from by questioning what they've said, it is not your duty to attempt to prematurely put a nail the metaphorical coffin. The entire point of this thread is to breed discussion, after all...

Did I at any point in time insinuate that Starry Night didn't genuinely listen to all of the bands he/she listened to enough? Nope. Unless you're a fan of Ernest Hemingway, I highly doubt you'd read that much into the little things.

I like Arcade Fire just fine but I'm going to go ahead and say they are probably the most overrated band going.

I'd agree Vampire Weekend is overrated, because they aren't doing anything much different than a lot of other similar bands but are a lot more popular. Also, I really don't understand why Wiz Khalifa is so popular. The song "Black and Yellow" shows absolutely no creativity, or artistic or songwriting ability of any form yet I've probably heard it 50 -75 times in the past month. Granted, give me as much **** as you want I like the song Stoned, but he doesn't deserve nearly the popularity he gets.

Vampire Weekend is definately overrated, and I like them a decent amount.

The thing about Wiz Khalifa is that he's had three albums that came out and he has had hits in the past but none that has gotten to this level of popularity. I like his second album a lot actually. People think that he's some new artist just coming out but he's been around for years!
