Richard Davis' bass on Astral Weeks is sublime. It transforms The Way Young Lovers Do from a sappy song to a classic track.

evil - interpol, so amazing

John Entwistle!
Unless I missed it, I'm very surprised nobody has mentioned The Real Me by the Who. That's the first song I always think of when bass is mentioned.
|
The whole Metal Box album by Public Image Ltd. is filled with brilliant bass.

Rodney Mullen is responsible for 90% of the tricks in skateboarding today and he's 47 and still tearing it up harder than anyone in the sport (last non-bass related post from me I promise).

(and yes this last non-bass related post from me too) |
New Order like Joy Division always made prominent use of the bass by using it to carry the rhythm, so you get alot of great bass driven songs like Age of Consent. |
Here's one for now:
|
^such an underrated song, one of my favorites on Lateralus, and yes, a great timbral combination of acoustic, electric, and harmonics-laden bass guitars. Songs like "46 & 2" and "Schism" would also fit in well here for their memorable basslines.
|
im quite surprised that no one mentioned incubus... at least the old incubus had some really great bass lines like psychisilocybin or are you in

my personal favourite runs a little counter to the busy lines most people drop in threads like these. all of 6 notes but such an amazing feel

^My favourite Jane's Addiction song (though I've only heard that one album).
Lady Cab Driver by Prince has some nice funky bass work, as do many other Prince tracks. Can't YouTube link them though, obviously. |
Something - Beatles (McCartney)
Old Brown Shoe - Beatles (McCartney, or Harrison) Silly Love Songs - McCartney & Wings If You Want Me To Stay - Sly & The Family Stone (Larry Graham) Roundabout - Yes (Chris Squire) Yazoo Street Scandal - The Band (Rick Danko) Up On Cripple Creek - The Band (Danko) Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing - Marvin ***e & Tammi Terrell (James Jamerson) Cissy Strut - The Meters (George Porter, Jr.) Coyote - Joni Mitchell (Jaco Pastorius) 400 Years - Wailers (Aston Barrett) Magnificent Seven - The Clash (Paul Simonon) |

I can't find any more songs by this band on youtube, but i really dig their bass player. He's got a pretty unique style. |
Prog really does a great job of showing off virtuosity on all instruments. The couple tracks posted are some highlights of the bass. |
a few more candidates
My list below starts with song name, followed by artist and bass player in ().
"And Your Bird Can Sing" - Beatles (Paul McCartney) "Got to Get You Into My Life" - Beatles (Paul McCartney) "Octopus's Garden" - Beatles (Paul McCartney) "Dreaming from the Waist" - Who (John Entwistle) "Heaven and Hell" - Who (John Entwistle) "Calodonia Mission" - Band (Rick Danko) "King Harvest" (Has Surely Come)" - Band (Rick Danko) "Stage Fright" - Band (Rick Danko) "Police and Thieves" - Clash (Paul Simonen) "(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais" - Clash (Paul Simonen) "Hitsville UK" - Clash (Paul Simonen) IMHO, Paul McCartney and Rick Danko played melodic and memorable bass on almost every Beatles and Band song, and did so without showboating or upstaging the song. I consider McCartney to be the most melodic rock bassist, the great James Jamerson notwithstanding. I specifically cited the superficially superficial song "Octopus's Garden" to show how well McCartney served the song, regardless of its significance. Both are/were excellent musicians and vocalists whose contributions and talents were not limited to the bass. McCartney in particular contributed lead guitar to several Beatles songs, notably "Taxman", which was somewhat ironically written and sung by George Harrison, the Beatles's nominal lead guitar player. This has to be one of my favorite songs on bass. question: What is the bass players name on Wonders single Do I Do?

my favourite bass-driven track is Primus' Jerry was a Race Car Driver

mind the god awful quality... stupid youtube. |
Radiohead basslines are cool, they are warm and groove oriented. Tool had awesome basslines, the dude used a delay pedal mostly. So many great bass songs out there, could fill up page after page.

Some Massive Attack
Turn your bass up good and loud. |

Haitian Fight Song - Charles Mingus

As expected, nobody mentioned a non-hit by a very underrated band.

A bit of a necro bump here, but I'm looking for tunes to play in my car (I just got a new stereo that bumps pretty hard). Preferably something close to these:
I'm really out of touch with the techno dub stuff so any help would be appreciated. Note for Batlord: Don't worry, I drove through the hood blasting Napalm Death, and Slayer when I first installed it. |
Oooops, yeah this is in the wrong thread.
