Save the Album
 

I've been watching these all night, they're interesting. If you just go to youtube and type in save the album it comes up with a bunch my favorite so far has been the one with Devendra, everything he's talked about that i've heard/just now checked out has been fantastic.

You know i'm sure this stuff is actually worth a listen, but when someone throws out 20+ albums I always think "ok where should I start?" which of these greatest albums of all time is the best?

I've checked out most of the albums he talked about but not all of them, i'll talk about my favorites.

Biff Rose "The Thorn In Mrs. Roses Side" was actually a huge influence on David Bowie he did a cover of both Fill Your Heart (Hunky Dory) and Buzz the Fuzz (unreleased I think?). Rose has kind of a strange voice. The only copy of this album I could find was a double release of it and Children of Light. The guy kind of reminds of Daniel Johnston at times, the vocals aren't as painful or direct but the delivery is at times childish like Johnstons (in a good way) and the pianos help the similarities too, here's a track from it.

Biff Rose "Molly"



Peter La Farge, i've actually heard of several times before when reading about Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash. He's the son of Oliver La Farge who wrote Laughing Boy. I've always been interested in checking Peter out but never had the chance to, I still havn't tracked the album down yet but the songs that Johnny Cash covered are amazing. Cash covered several others also, this is my favorite.




Linda Perhacs "Parallelograms" is easily my favorite find, she sounds like Joni Mitchell or Vashti Bunyan if they'd dabbled in art rock (this song doesn't reflect her more experimental side). I don't have much to say on her, Hey Who Really Cares is honestly the most beautiful songs i've ever heard. I'm not exaggerating.




Animal Collective member Panda Bear has this year received alot of attention for Person Pitch, but upon hearing Young Prayer I liked it just as much, it's a much different album. The album mainly consists of Noah's beautiful voice being kind of, unintelligible falsetto over soft music it's still beautiful in the Sigur Ros sense. The songs do sort of, as Devendra said, take you somewhere. Like Person Pitch the album holds a Brian Wilson feel to it, except much more haunting and ghostly in my opinion, not necessarily dark though.

Antony and the Johnsons is fairly popular you may have listened to him already, but if you havn't I suggest you do. When I first heard "I am a Bird Now" I fell in love with it, his voice is so beautifully haunting. He's one of those vocalist that really doesn't need to worry about being cliche because his voice is so expressive it sounds real.




I saved the best for last, i've hyped Vashti Bunyan so much I basically have my description of her, which i've repeated many times on this site, memorized. She's pretty similar to Linda Perhacs who I just talked about, so there's a comparison you'll know. When she first came out she was publicized to be the next Marianne Faithful and the female Bob Dylan though the female Nick Drake would've been more appropriate. She, like Drake, went largely unnoticed when she first debuted though in recent times shes gained popularity because of her influence on artists like Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom. She's worked with Devendra before, as well as Animal Collective. Just Another Diamond Day is a beautiful folk album (it's easily in my top 10 favorite albums ever) that reflects nature so strongly even when driving through my town with all the pollution and trash I can't help but think of the European fields she'd traveled through when writing this album.

Not only does Devendra make amazing music but he also listens to great music. He's one of those greats that will never stop making music purely because he loves it so much.

Linda Perhacs has a very haunting beauty about her music, I really like her voice, but it seems a bit too fragile if you get what I mean.

^Yeah, I would have to hear more, because if she sounds like that in every song then it would get old.

Normally I don't use this since i'm a bright eyes fan but I will now. What the hell you're a bright eyes fan, Conor spends more time trying to sound like a fragile sad boy then he does singing.

I know, I know. Her voice in that song, while it did work very well for that song, was very soft. Not all of Bright Eyes songs have super frail vocals and that's what makes it works. Again, I'm going to have to check out a few more songs of hers on a myspace or something before I decide. Conor's voice doesn't sound the exact same in every song, and in Cassadaga his vocals are quite a bit stronger. I was just going to get disappointed if her voice was that frail in every song.

Edit: If You Were My Man by Linda Perhacs is beautiful, not as frail and it's still lovely.
