Albums That People Gasp With Astonishment When You Tell Them You've Never Heard Them

Marvin Gaye - Whats Going On
Van Morrison - Astral Weeks

Everytime I tell people i've never heard these albums they always looked shocked.

Post yours.

sleepy jack 11-16-2007 07:33 PM

The Rolling Stones "Exile On Main Street"
Stevie Wonder "Innervisions"
The Rolling Stones "Let It Bleed"
Marvin Gaye "Whats Goin' On"
The Jimi Hendrix Experience "Are You Experienced?"
James Brown "Live at the Apollo"
The Rolling Stones "Beggars Banquet"

i'm stopping now I don't feel like thinking anymore, there's tons of artists I havn't even heard anything by like the Band for instance and i've only heard I think one The Who album. I've always had a dislike for classic rock and albums that are held as classics.

There's also alot of indie classic's ive never listened to like Live at the Witch Trials, Murmur and Source Tags & Codes that some of my friends are surprised i've never heard.

Yeah that's more the sort of thing I was getting at really with this thread. Stuff you would listen to normally but never got around to it.

sleepy jack 11-16-2007 07:45 PM

Oh I also havn't heard Daydream Nation, I didn't care for Sonic Nurse so I havn't bothered with Sonic Youth ever since.

lol, you know I own that album and still havn't heard it.

White Lies 11-17-2007 05:43 AM

I haven't heard any albums by Pulp, Blur, Suede, etc.

people seem surprised. I'm pretty sure I would like these bands if I checked them out, so i should do so.

right-track 11-17-2007 07:11 AM

A lot of the albums mentioned should be heard even if your not a fan of that particular artist.
Albums like 'What's Going On?', 'Live at the Apollo', 'Exile On Main Street' and 'Are You Experienced?' should get a listen at least for their historical context.

A while back I went on a classic album spending spree, buying up CD's that were considered classics irrespective of whether or not I was into them.
I was in for a few pleasant surprises and it opened up loads of musical territory I wouldn't have otherwise explored.

To make you gasp with astonishment...never heard;
Prince - '1999'
Radiohead - 'OK Computer' (incredible, but true)
Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band - 'Trout Mask Replica'
Bruce Springsteen - 'Born in the U.S.A.' (not heard an album of his front to back yet)

And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
There's shedloads of albums I'd love to hear and most of them considered classics.

Should you though? Does that even add up to those not born in the states? Speaking of Amerirocentric...

Jonz 11-17-2007 09:26 AM

Never heard an album from Radiohead, The Smiths, The Beatles, Sonic Youth, as well as 99.99% of other highly regarded bands/artists who were releasing stuff back in the 70's, 80's, and 90's. Some I've obtained albums from, but just cbf/never get around to listening to them....

holdyoualways 11-17-2007 09:45 AM

i havent heard anything from the smiths or radiohead or the cure or the clash or the ramones or blahblahblah
pretty much any band/artist that people speak highly of, i havent heard their stuff
but they sound like they'd be boring so

jackhammer 11-17-2007 12:14 PM

Any Sonic Youth
Dinosuar Jr
Danzig
Misfits.

A brilliantly varied artist, you really should listen to a couple of albums of his.

adidasss 11-17-2007 04:03 PM

The odd song I have heard I've not liked...only the covers...so I'm in no hurry...:\

Brock_West 11-17-2007 06:13 PM

Anything Radiohead, Nirvana, Green Day, Weezer, 99% of music from the 90s and today.

I will gasp when people say they don't listen to the Beatles. It's insane.

That makes me sad inside, you're really missing out. Especially from the Sonic Youth Dinosaur Jr. point.

Piss Me Off 11-18-2007 10:55 AM

Pet Sounds. Whoops.

billyjerome 11-18-2007 02:44 PM

Pink Moon

Everyone should listen to this album at least several times through before tomorrow.

Urban Hat€monger ? 11-18-2007 02:45 PM

You've not quite got the point of this thread have you

As much as I like that album I do think it's a bit overrated. Just listen to a Best Of The Beach Boys CD instead

billyjerome 11-18-2007 03:00 PM

I see...did anyone else notice that the title of this topic is too wordy? No? Alright. Disregard my last post then. :)

I had never listened to Cheap Trick - At Budokan until yesterday. My buddy (who is a big Cheap Trick fan) always told me there was something wrong with me for not listening to it.

Let me tell you this much...I still don't see the appeal of the album.

David Bowie is outstanding. Pretty much everything by him simply rules. He seems to have an odd fetish for prog musicians though. :D

Anyway, for me, it's Pet Sounds. I like the Beach Boys and I've been trying to get hold of Pet Sounds all year (I haven't been allowed to use BT). Now that I'm back from uni, I'm getting it right now.

Clarification

So you're not that well versed on the Stones. It's not that big a deal. You should definitely give Exile a listen, but, and I usually get alot of heat for saying this, I don't think you're missing too much with the Stones. They're a really good group, and I enjoy their music, but I don't think I'd really have missed out too much if I hadn't ever heard them. Jimi Hendrix's albums, on the other hand, you have to listen to. I bought a greatest hits album from Jimi when I was about 14. When "I got Are You Experienced?" (which shared about half of its tracks with the greatest hits cd I had) it blew me away. Some of the B-Sides I hadn't heard were better than the radio cuts. Also, you need to hear "What's Going On". It is truly an emotional experience that you'll want to hear over again a few times. He gets a little religious if that bothers you, but it should really be taken as an expression of his self, which comprises of Christianity among other things. It was 6th on Rolling Stone Magazine's all time album list, and 1st by any Black artist, and 1st from all the albums of the 70's. Of all the albums you put up, that one is the one you should give a listen to first.

Too many bands, not enough time. If I wasn't into films just as much as music, I could find the time.

right-track 11-19-2007 12:46 PM

Sonic Youth is essential jackhammer.

bardonodude 11-19-2007 12:49 PM

Prince- Purple Rain

Was talking to a fellow music nut @ work today and we were saying that It's virtually impossible to listen to EVERY band worth their salt, otherwise you would never do anything else. I have been listening to a lot of post rock lately so that's my excuse. Sorry MB -i'm off topic!

That's crazy.
I just don't see how you could like Pink Floyd based on just the radio cuts alone. Pink Floyd has so many great albums, even beyond the ones they get the most credit for (Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, The Wall). You really need to listen to one of them, ANY of them from the '60s or '70s, to be able to appreciate what the've done. I love Atom Heart Mother and Meddle, but be sure to listen to some of their stuff from back when Syd Barrett was the songwriter (Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, A Saucer Full Of Secrets, the Relics Compilation).

Indeed. I have that problem too... so much music to listen to in the world, not enough time. And I have a lot going on outside music-listening/reviewing/playing etc.
