Teenage Fanclub - Probably at least known by name in groups like this, they've had an astonishingly long run of fantastic songs and albums. Somehow, despite writing some of the catchiest, hookiest songs ever, they never had a single hit.

The Divine Comedy - A British band (well, really just one person, Neil Hannon) that existed throughout the Britpop era but was never part of it, as the Divine Comedy made pop that was quite unique. Literate, wry, grandiose and extremely melodic, Hannon was one of the best song-writers of the '90s.
Sparky's Dream was hit for Teenage Fanclub in the U.K. Grand Prix is a great solid pop album and seconded for The Divine Comedy. Neil Hannon is both lyrically brilliant and a brilliant musician. Not for all tastes and Fin De Siecle disappointed me but A Short Album Of Love is a great album. I need to re-investigate them. Great reminder.

His music was different. It was childish, and at times just flat-out bizarre, but after a while it's endearing, and his music can be a refreshing change-of-pace from the music that so desperately needs to fit formula.
YES!

In Britain Barrett has almost god like status amongst many artists, critics and fans.

Well since I listen to more PF than probably anyone in my school since my school's male music demographics is about 40% metal and 50% classic rock no one I know listens to Syd. In fact they would probably say 'You like music from a boring stoner band, but you like this nutjob in it even more?' ...

Some people like Pink Floyd here, but it is basically DSTOM, WYWH, and The Wall. AC/DC and Led Zeppilen is huge in my school, but I am not sure whether the music is popular here.
