I don't remember the intent of the photo, but I thought looking directly into the camera was cheesy and the cameraman was having certain difficulties taking the photo so we had to wait a while.

With something to prop both feet on is desired, but in a pinch you are correct. Just make sure to keep both eyes forward if you don't want to give anyone the wrong impression.
