Just listened to MinionTVs debut album. Pretty great post-rock album. Propably goes into my top 5 list of post-rock albums released this year. That is quite good since 2010 has had some really great post-rock.

Hank The Drifter

I thought the same thing when I first heard it, but then I listened to it again and it really started to grow on me. With each listen I like it a little more. Then again it appeals perfectly to my taste, so that might be why haha.

Sonic Youth - Dirty



This is my first listen to the album and I'm enjoying it considerably. I still remember going to the local record store, maybe sometime around 93 or 94, and bringing this up to the listening station (back when you could do that with brand new CDs! - This is America, mind you - I know it's common practice in many other countries). I liked some parts but ultimately decided not to get it. It wouldn't be until 2009 that I would decide to listen to a Sonic Youth album from start to finish (Daydream Nation). Even though I saw them live around 2004-5.

I loved Dirty from the moment I heard the first crazy feedbacked riff of 100%. I think it is the perfect starting point for SY newbs. It has plenty of accessible material but still has plenty of the crazy guitar antics that made them famous. My favorites are probably Theresa's Sound World, Sugar Kane, and Wish Fulfillment. It would take me about 4 years to pick up Daydream Nation, not be impressed by it, and then another 3 to listen to Goo and decide I needed their whole discography.

Oh, and I'll buy records Butch Vig has produced based solely off that. I love the sound that guy gives bands. That's why I picked up AFI's Sing the Sorrow, and I actually really like that album.

I like Sing the Sorrow a lot too. Perhaps less now than then, but still. I don't recall whether I knew it was a Butch Vig production or not. But I do remember paying attention to his name in the 90s, he was one of 3 or 4 producers I paid attention to. For some reason the only one that comes to mind is L7's Bricks are Heavy, but it looks like he also did Nevermind, the 2 best Pumpkins albums, and my favorite Helmet. Go Butch! He's also done Garbage though which I don't care for...but that's the band's fault, not his.

Anyhow yeah, I think you're right that Dirty would be a good starting point for the SY noob. I should have picked it up that day.

I don't mind Garbage, they've put out some cool sounding music. I like how they are incredibly polished and overproduced but still manage to come off sounding alternative. I do prefer his production work, though. He has been a little careless in the bands he chooses to produce these days, but I think that is more lack of opportunity than anything.

I'm honestly not sure what album would I recommend to a Sonic Youth noob. My introduction to them was EVOL and I ended up being a huge fan. Maybe Daydream Nation is a good starting point, 'cause not only is it a great album (one of their very best), it also ties together their early deconstructive phase to their more rock oriented one.
