Playing this obnoxiously loudly tonight. It's kind of... IDM before IDM was a thing. Just a fun collection of noises.



Side note: how did artists sample music like this before the advent of programs like garage band or whatever?

Great album! IDM was definitely already a thing when it came out though.

Heh. You're talking like there was no such thing as audio software in the mid to late 90s. There was though. It's actually the stuff I learned on. I'm not sure specifically what Alan Sutherland's methods were on this album. I remember when it came out reading an article about him that made it sound like he just recorded multiple tracks of himself on the turntables, though he may have used a sampler or some of the aforementioned software.

Really good Post-rock, all instrumental. All the basic elements, stringed instruments, loud drums, and a beautiful electric guitar tone. Highly recommend if you like something like Explosions in the Sky or Godspeed You! Black Emperor.


(Richard D James Album)

I've always liked this album, but after revisiting it about a dozen times, I have to say it's my favorite by him.

Has anyone tackled this one yet?

I've listened to the first CD and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Reminds me a bit of Swans. Love of Life, especially.
