It's just so rare that the genre gets even close to really speaking to me. I didn't grow up with hip hop, it wasn't part of my formative years, it wasn't anything I explored as I started to really expand my musical horizons. No hip hop act has played any part at all in my personal musical journey, so it's no wonder that the genre means nearly nothing to me. If I had a friend that was really into hip hop or something, things might have looked different. It's really an uphill struggle for me to try and forge a connection with the genre and I wonder if it's even worth the trouble, considering how much amazing music there is out there in other genres, just waiting for me to dive in.

Generally speaking, how much attention do you pay to the lyrics? It's a pretty central way for a lot of great hip hop artists to make a really meaningful connection.

That's no doubt part of the problem. I listen to Finnish as easily as English, which is to say that my emotional connection with the singing comes more from the delivery than from the actual lyrical content. Sure, I appreciate the lyrics of a few smarter-than-average lyricists like Suzanne Vega, Bryan Ferry and Kate Bush, but I'd probably love them just as much if they had sung in Hebrew. I'm just not a lyrics kind of person. I'm all about harmony, sound and melody.

That means hip hop has to involve me in other ways than what the genre traditionally places it's focus on.

Anyways, a lot of your problems are a lot of the problems I had with the genre.

Thanks for fixing it, I've got some work cut out for me then. Some things on this list, I will probably just skip since I know I don't care for them already (the Gorillaz, for example), but I don't know most of them.

Think Tank

Blur is always so hit or miss with me even though I think Damon is a 21st century visionary. The band as a whole can just seem so bland and unoriginal sometimes. This album however kicks f*cking ass and might actually be my favorite Blur album.

It's a work in-progress, but I'm determined to get there. I'd like to have a rough guide of at least 25 great albums in each genre. I was also gonna do one for pop. Girls Aloud, **** yeahhh.

The Silence Set
Teeth Out

This is f*cking beautiful abstract and atmospheric folk music. Folk music can get so damn repetitive and just bathe in redundancy but this album is like a huge smack in the face with some fresh air. I don't get how this album has slipped under so many radars. Nils Frahm and Heather Broderick of Horse Feathers make appearances on here. Huge gem of 2015. Wow.
