Lycia - Cold (1996)
I've discovered some great darkwave albums recently but this stands out as a great find. It's an amazing ethereal darkwave album that sort of reminds me of The Sisters of Mercy crossed with early Cocteau Twins. It's gloomy and despairing but it has an amazing atmosphere and is beautiful to listen to.

Lamb - Lamb (1996)
Anybody who likes trip-hop should have this in their collection. The production on this album is top-notch and the heavy drum & bass influence makes it stand out from similar type albums. This is an album that will blow your mind through headphones.

I heard At the Drive In after the Mars Volta and was really surprised to hear so much of their prog side already there. I wonder how Sparta feels comparing themselves to TMV?

Haha Sparta comes no where near TMV. I actually really dislike Sparta, but Jim Ward was in another side band called Sleepercar. Americana indie/folk/country kinda style. Interesting stuff. But Sparta, I hate that band.

Pink Floyd's Piper at the Gates of Dawn is great, never get tired of it.

Nico - Desertshore

It's been a while since I listened to this one, and a while too long it's been. Love the darkness of this album and the grim sounding strings throughout. I don't particularly think that Nico is the best female singer that I've heard (I generally don't like singers who belt too often, Annie Lennox for example), but her vocals definitely work on this album. I'm going to Amoeba Records today and I'm going to see if they have this album or the new XTG album.

Maybe it's just the fact that this band come from my neck of the woods and I am pretty loyal but I really like this album. It's just great Alternative Rock songs all the way through, catchy songs but with a bit of meaning behind them as well. Not to mention the fact it's a double album and it doesn't drag at all and feels really natural. Spanish Radio in particular is great.

Probably their best work.

Pretty good quirky Russian hip hop. I know absolutely nothing about this artist, I'm not even sure how many people are involved, but all I can say is this album is quite good. At times this album has an experimental edge somewhat in the ballpark of Dälek, but other times it's much more lighthearted. Well worth a listen if you like your rapping with a side of weirdness.

The Knife - Silent Shout (2006)
Nothing new to me, I've been listening to it since 2006 but I'm very much digging it right now while working late. I don't know what I have as my favorite album of 2006 but this certainly could be it.

^ New album is out soon too (2 singles have been released).

I have the whole Silent Shout album, too. I tried to listen to it but I just can't get into it. I think it's just one notch too high on the weird scale for me. Some of it is a little bit easier for me to get into, but everything on the album is so far from addictive that I don't think the band will ever stick to me.

:( I know a lot of people love them on MB, too. I wish I could hear what you all hear!

Oh I know, anxiously awaiting! I've only listened to "Full of Fire", not the other one. And I intend to keep it that way till the album comes out.
